This year’s theme is Strength Beyond All Odds.
It reflects the resilience, perseverance and achievements of people with albinism in the face of pervasive misconceptions, discrimination and violence.
Despite these obstacles to well-being and security, leaders of organizations representing persons with albinism continue to work hard to support the most vulnerable.
I am encouraged that persons with albinism are increasingly taking their rightful place in decision-making platforms around the world, leading to meaningful commitments, such as the Plan of Action on Albinism in Africa.
And I welcome the work of the United Nations independent expert on albinism, in promoting the rights of persons with albinism.
Yet, much remains to be done.
There is deep need to demystify the condition and end discrimination.
I take this opportunity to urge all nations and communities to protect and fulfil the human rights of all persons with albinism and provide necessary support and care.

SECRETARY-GENERAL/G7
This morning the Secretary-General landed in London on his way to the G7 meeting in Cornwall, where he will go tomorrow morning.
In London, the Secretary-General held a series of bilateral meetings with senior British officials. He met with Alok Sharma, the president of the COP26, which will take place in Glasgow in December; Lord Ahmad, the Minister for South Asia and the Commonwealth; and also Lord Goldsmith, the Minister for the Pacific and the Environment.
And at 1 pm our time, the Secretary-General held a press conference in the UK about the G7 meeting. In the briefing to the G7 press, the Secretary-General underscored the pivotal moment in which we find ourselves. He will outline the necessary bold steps that the international community needs to take in the face of both the Covid pandemic and the climate change crisis.
CENTRAL AMERICA
The international community yesterday reaffirmed its solidarity with forcibly displaced people in Central America and Mexico and with the seven countries that make up the Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework, known as MIRPS. This happened during the Solidarity Event for Forcibly Displaced Persons and Host Communities in Central America and Mexico, which was hosted by Costa Rica.
The event announced $110 million in contributions, including $7.6 million from the Spanish Government.
Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, encouraged continued cooperation, saying that the crisis in Central America is both humanitarian in its impact and related to security and development in its roots.
MYANMAR
On Myanmar, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet today warned that a further escalation in violence was unfolding across the country. She said that it must be halted to prevent even greater loss of life and a deepening humanitarian emergency.
She said there appear to be no efforts towards de-escalation but rather a build-up of troops in key areas, contrary to the commitments the military made to ASEAN to cease the violence.
The High Commissioner encouraged the intensification of regional diplomacy, including by ASEAN and other influential States, to insist on the immediate cessation of violence and ongoing human rights violations. Dialogue is urgently needed with the National Unity Government and civil society stakeholders.

Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel's new prime minister on Sunday, after winning a confidence vote with the narrowest of margins, just 60 votes to 59. His victory ends a 12-year grip on power by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader.
After four elections in two years, Bennett's incoming government breaks a long political deadlock and ushers in the most diverse coalition Israel has ever seen, including the first Arab party to serve in the government. In his speech before the Knesset confidence vote, Bennett celebrated the diversity and warned of polarization within the country.
"Twice in history, we have lost our national home precisely because the leaders of the generation were not able to sit with one and another and compromise. Each was right, yet with all their being right, they burnt the house down on top of us," Bennett said. "I am proud of the ability to sit together with people with very different views from my own."
Bennett became the premier as the leader of Yamina, a right-wing party with only seven seats in Israel's parliament, the Knesset, making him the only prime minister in the country's history with such a small faction. By contrast, Netanyahu's Likud party won 30 seats in March's election. Once again, however, Netanyahu could not cobble together a governing coalition with a majority of the 120 members of Knesset.
US President Joe Biden on Sunday congratulated Bennett in his first statement about the political situation in Israel, saying he looked forward to working with the new prime minister.
"Israel has no better friend than the United States," Biden also wrote in his statement. "The bond that unites our people is evidence of our shared values and decades of close cooperation and as we continue to strengthen our partnership, the United States remains unwavering in its support for Israel's security. My administration is fully committed to working with the new Israeli government to advance security, stability, and peace for Israelis, Palestinians, and people throughout the broader region."

Global Video: A look at Canada's limits on blood donation from gay men and what's next
Gay men and those who identify as men who have sex with men (MSM) were barred from donating blood or plasma in Canada starting in the 1980s after what was known as the "tainted blood scandal."
Since then, Canadian Blood Services has slowly been changing the ban, requiring this group of men to at first abstain from sex for up to five years, but now up to three months.

The use of messenger RNA technology (mRNA) in the creation of COVID-19 vaccines have made a considerable impact in the fight against the novel coronavirus, with the first doses being given to people less than a year after the pandemic was declared.
But mRNA technology is not new; not only is it used within our own cells to make proteins, but it has been used in testing against other diseases and viruses like cancer and ebola for well over a decade. And with the success of its use in COVID-19 vaccines, it could mean a breakthrough in how to use it going forward.
As Sean Previl explains, while it doesn't mean a vaccine for something like cancer is coming as quickly as it did for COVID-19, it could still have a big impact on the fight against other diseases and viruses going forward.

Global Video: Dogecoin: How the joke cryptocurrency became no laughing matter
It started as a joke. Dogecoin was created by a couple of engineers in 2013 as a parody of Bitcoin. And as a way to immortalize a dog gone cute Shiba Inu through Internet memes.
That joke caught on like wildfire with Reddit users propelling its value with it to eight million U.S. dollars within months.
Doge, as its known, has become a go to for tipping people online around the world for good deeds or an interesting idea. And the price of Dogecoin has soared during the pandemic, driven even higher by scores of young traders embracing meme culture.
