Myanmar
From Myanmar, the UN country team there continues to call for the protection of civilians, as reports of breaches of human rights continue, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, torture, ill treatment, and enforced disappearances.
Since the military takeover nearly six months ago, the violence carried out by security forces has left at least 930 civilians dead, including women and children, and thousands more people injured. The UN in Myanmar calls for accountability to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Syria
In Syria, the UN is very concerned about reports of civilian casualties and displacement due to hostilities in Dara’a Al Balad and the risk of further escalation.
The UN is monitoring the situation with concern, including reports of a period of relative calm today as discussions to reach a local agreement were underway. But the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has documented the death of eight civilians, including a woman and four children, with another six civilians, including two children, wounded between the 27th and the 29th of July.
The UN has also confirmed the displacement of 2,500 people due to violence and insecurity over the last 72 hours, and we have received reports of the displacement of over 10,000 people.
UN and humanitarian partners are working to scale up the humanitarian response to people in need in Dara’a Al Balad and in the areas of temporary displacement.
We reiterate the Secretary-General’s call for a nationwide ceasefire and urge all parties to de-escalate the situation and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law. The UN further calls upon parties to ensure safe, sustained, and unimpeded access to all in need.

"Each and every victim of trafficking in persons has a story we should listen to. Victims’ voices are key to preventing trafficking, supporting survivors, and bringing perpetrators to justice. Traffickers choose their victims from among the vulnerable, exploiting desperation and lack of awareness. The majority of those targeted are people in economic need who are misled. Almost two-thirds of detected victims are women and girls, and the share of children has tripled in the last 15 years. But despite their real and perceived vulnerabilities, survivors of trafficking are examples of strength, courage, and resilience.
On this year’s World Day against Trafficking in Persons, I salute victims as they rebuild their own lives and help protect those of others. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has launched a campaign titled ‘Victims’ Voices Lead the Way’ to put a spotlight on victims’ untold stories, and on their roles in the fight against trafficking. Member States must engage, listen, and learn from survivors, and support victim-led organizations. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened vulnerabilities to trafficking, making victims’ contributions more critical than ever.
At UNODC, we continue to assist countries and all stakeholders in implementing the Trafficking in Persons Protocol, and in developing victim-centred approaches. Through the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, we also provide essential support to victims, and help empower them as part of the response. 'Afghan FLOOD Kills 150 as Clean-Up Operation Begins'
Clean-up operations have begun after a devastating flood in an Afghan village.
The remote village of Merdesh was hit by a flash flood killing at least 150 people.
Villagers carried the body of a child wrapped in a piece of cloth, recovered from the rubble.
Taliban-controlled Merdesh is in Nuristan's Kamdesh district, near the Pakistan border.
It's unclear how equipped the Taliban are to deal with rural emergencies like these.
A Taliban spokesperson has ordered that $62,000 is spent to help clean-up and rebuild.

Global News journalist Rachel Gilmore joined mentalist Jaymes White for a "ghost hunt" at the Arcand Homestead, an old farming property on the outskirts of Ottawa that dates back to the 1800s.
White says he’s a “skeptic” about the paranormal, but he’s also run seances since 2015, using Victorian-era techniques to allow guests to “contact” the unknown. His seances regularly sell out and, according to his website, “people have been known to run out of the locations screaming and crying.”
Armed with an iPhone and stabilizer, Gilmore sought to bring an open-minded but skeptical lens to an abandoned barn on the property, but she never imagined what would actually go down...

Global Video: Can genetically-modified mosquitoes help fight vector-borne diseases like malaria?
This spring, a U.K.-based company released genetically engineered mosquitos in the Florida Keys – part of an experiment that researchers hope could eventually result in a new weapon against diseases like Dengue Fever.
Mosquitos have long been associated with the spread of vector-borne diseases, but scientists hope by genetically altering their DNA, they could prevent them from passing on pathogens to humans.
A similar experiment was carried out two years ago in Burkina Faso, where malaria is endemic.
But for some, the practice has raised questions about the impact on local ecosystems and potentially on human health. Alyssa Julie explains.

Global Video: How viral vector and mRNA COVID-19 vaccines work
From viral vector vaccines like AstraZeneca to mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna, they all have the same goal: to train your body how to fight off COVID-19. But, they use different strategies to create antibodies.
For example, AstraZeneca uses a crippled virus to deliver the coronavirus spike protein, while Pfizer and Moderna use mRNA, the part of the coronavirus' genetic code and teaches your cells how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response.

Global Video: What's behind Western Canada's historic heat wave?
The heat seen in Western Canada this past weekend, melting historic temperature records, is not over yet, thanks to a "heat dome" settling over the region.
The dome is fuelled by a ridge of high pressure, trapping heat beneath it. While it is a typical pattern seen in July or August, the unseasonable June weather has stretched from B.C. to Alberta with the dangerous heat expected to move more into the Prairies into next weekend.
As Ross Hull reports, the system is likely to break by next week, but it still has left people sweltering under the sun only days after summer officially began.

Global Video: How being in COVID-19 lockdown has changed our bodies
As the global pandemic has affected many for over a year, people have experienced changes to their lifestyles – and in turn, their bodies – because of the stresses brought on by COVID-19.
By spending more time sedentary and solitary under strict lockdowns, experts say they’re not surprised that people have reported bodily changes like weight gain, as well as neck and back pain.
In fact, a U.S. study found that when stay-at-home orders were first introduced in 2020, Americans gained 1.8 lbs (0.8 kg) on average in March and April 2020.
Global’s Alexia Kapralos looks into how the pandemic has taken a toll on our bodies, and what people can do to improve their physical health as normalcy is on the horizon.
