WESTERN SAHARA The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura is planning to conduct a new phase of visits to all concerned interlocutors in the region in the coming days. The Personal Envoy will travel to Rabat tomorrow to meet Moroccan officials. It is also his intention to visit Western Sahara in the course of this trip. During this phase of the engagement, the Personal Envoy intends to remain guided by the clear precedents set by his predecessors. Following the Personal Envoy’s regional tour in January, he looks forward to deepening the consultations he initiated at that time with all parties concerned on the perspectives to constructively advance the political process on Western Sahara. YEMEN The UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism for Yemen urgently needs additional funds to continue its work. With its current resources, the Mission will be forced to suspend operations at the end of August. The Mission is an essential service that facilitates the flow of commercial goods into Yemen’s Red Sea ports. Since 2016, it has cleared more than 1,600 ships to ensure essential items such as food, fuel and other commercial goods are able to reach Yemeni men, women and children. Yemen imports nearly 90 per cent of its food. The Security Council has often expressed its commitment to facilitating these imports, most recently in resolution 2624. The Mission needs $3.5 million for its operations from September until the end of the year. Disability is a reality for many Canadians. Yet, people with disabilities often struggle to access businesses, nightclubs and other spaces. This is true in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community as well. “I feel very isolated in a lot of those spaces because they’re not accessible,” disability awareness consultant Andrew Gurza tells Global News about hot spots in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, “The Village.” “And if I can access the space a lot of the community doesn’t know how to receive me. Has never seen a disabled person like me in the space.” Global News’ Alyssa Julie spoke to two disabled people in the queer community, who said physical barriers aren’t the only hurdle they encounter. Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada. However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure. One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind. In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments. The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group. Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing. Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002. A recent survey released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNC) and Project 1907 showed that reports of anti-Asian incidents last year saw a 47 per cent increase from 2020. Sometimes she smells hairspray or vomit all day. There are very few things she can eat. As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations. They now separate between those who are admitted due to COVID-19 and those who are admitted for another reason but test positive during screening. This is often being referred to as an "incidental COVID hospitalization" which means people in hospital with the disease are not necessarily there because of COVID-19. But doctors say there is a lot more to an incidental case than someone testing positive despite coming in for something like a broken arm or a fall.
