Background: GENEVA (28 June 2022) – The UN Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW) on Tuesday deplored the incidents that led to the deaths of at least 23 migrants as they tried to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla last Friday. It is yet to be determined whether the victims died falling from the fence, in a stampede, or as a result of any actions taken by the border control officers. The independent experts urged the two States to carry out immediate and thorough investigations and to hold those responsible to account. To avoid the repetition of such tragedies, the Committee also asked Morocco, Spain and the other EU States to expand the availability of pathways for safe and orderly migration, and take measures to guarantee and respect the right to seek and receive asylum. The Committee issued the following media statement: “We are appalled by the deaths of these migrants who intended to cross the border to seek a better life based on their legitimate human rights. We express our grave concern and deep sadness over this tragedy. We deplore the violations of the right to life, which is enshrined in the International Convention on Migrant Workers. Based on the information we have gathered, we remind all States that migrants shall not be subjected to any cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. States must also guarantee that all policies and practices at borders effectively respect all human rights obligations, ensuring the right to life, dignity, security and physical integrity of migrants in all circumstances. We also regret that there are wounded migrants and security forces officers, while it remains unclear whether minors are among those injured.

She told Council members that ongoing M23 and other armed group activities in the country’s East threaten to reverse hard-won progress in security and stability in the DRC and the region. Ms. Keita called on the Security Council to lend its full support to the region’s efforts to defuse the current diplomatic and security tensions. She also urged the DRC and Rwanda to seize the opportunity of the forthcoming Summit, to be hosted by President [João] Lourenço of Angola, to resolve their differences through dialogue. Ms. Keita as a reminder, will speak to you at the Security stakeout after the Security Council is done with her. CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC Turning to the Central African Republic, where our peacekeepers there have launched a military operation against armed groups in Ouanda-Djallé, which is 175 km South of Birao. The Mission said that people in this area had been deeply impacted by the recent arrival of armed groups in their community. Many of them were forcibly displaced and were living in very precarious conditions. Peacekeepers have managed to secure the city and operations are continuing today to allow displaced people to return to their homes. The Mission says they are conducting robust day and night patrols, as well as aerial surveillance missions. However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind. In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments. The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group. Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing. Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002. A recent survey released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNC) and Project 1907 showed that reports of anti-Asian incidents last year saw a 47 per cent increase from 2020. As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations.
