UKRAINE
Denise Brown, the humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, visited the front-line city of Mykolaiv, in the south of the country today.
Ms. Brown met with people whose lives have been devasted by the Russian invasion, and with aid organizations working to support them. She was accompanied by representatives of a number of UN agencies working on the ground, on the humanitarian response. She also met with local and regional authorities and was able to monitor the arrival of the first batch of an additional 28 truckloads of aid supplies provided by the UN.
Her visit comes as people in Mykolaiv face a serious humanitarian crisis. The war has destroyed the water network, leaving some 250,000 people who remained in
the city – that’s about half of its pre-war population. And those people have been struggling every day to access safe drinking water, among other struggles.
And, also, on the overall humanitarian response we, along with our partners, have provided critical support to more than half a million people since the start of the war.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, arrived in Nairobi, in Kenya, this afternoon after attending the Pre-COP27 meeting that took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and she represented the Secretary-General there.
Tomorrow, she is scheduled to meet with the newly elected Kenyan President, Dr. William Ruto. She will also attend a roundtable with Kenyan County Governors to discuss climate action.
On then on the 6th of October, she will travel to Kajiado, a county heavily impacted by the ongoing
drought in Kenya, where she will visit a vaccination and livestock feed distribution site and a hospital. As mentioned, she will then fly out to Cape Town, South Africa where, on Friday, she will deliver the Desmond Tutu Lecture.
IRAQ
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative for Iraq, briefed the Security Council. She noted that, although calls for Iraq’s leaders to overcome their differences, and form a government, have abounded since elections were held a year ago, discord and power play have prevailed over a sense of common duty. The situation remains highly volatile, she said, describing the events of the past days.
The Special Representative emphasized the UN’s intense engagements during the past months and weeks; from participating in dialogue and holding countless bilateral meetings to drafting roadmaps and conducting shuttle diplomacy in various forms. Believe me, she said, we tried, non-stop.
The Special Representative added that it is high time for Iraq’s leaders, all of them, to engage in dialogue, collectively define core Iraqi needs and pull the country back from the ledge.
SOMALIA
The Secretary-General condemned yesterday’s attacks in Beletweyne, HirShabelle, perpetrated by Al-Shabaab. The attacks resulted in many casualties, including state officials.
The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of the bereaved as well as to the Government and people of Somalia. He reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to work with regional and other international actors in supporting the people and Government of Somalia on their path toward building a peaceful country.

HAITI
The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the health and safety of people in Haiti following the confirmation of two positive cases of cholera and multiple suspected cases in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The United Nations is ready to deploy emergency response teams to support affected communities as soon as safe access is assured and fuel supplies are unblocked.
The Secretary-General calls for immediate and unfettered access on the ground to facilitate the delivery of fuel for humanitarian purposes. Fuel deliveries have been blocked at the port since mid-September, which has disrupted not only the daily life of the Haitian people, but also the ability and the capacity of our colleagues on the ground and the international community to respond to a compounding crisis.
The Secretary General appeals to all stakeholders to work together in this time of crisis, to ensure that the gains made over the past 12 years in the fight against cholera are not eroded.
CLIMATE
This morning, as you will have seen, the Secretary-General spoke to you on the first day of the pre-COP27 meeting which got underway in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Secretary-General said the work ahead is as immense as the climate impacts we are seeing around the world. He warned that while climate chaos gallops ahead, climate action has stalled.
He underscored that this is not the time to point fingers or twiddle thumbs. It is time for a game-changing, quantum level compromises between developed and emerging economies. And he urged leaders at the highest level to take full part in COP27 in Egypt next month.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
Staying on the subject of COP, the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, is in Kinshasa for the Pre-COP27.
Speaking at the event this morning, she recognized the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s critical role in working to preserve the world’s second largest humid tropical forest and called for greater international support for these efforts.
She also echoed the messages delivered by the Secretary-General in this building, earlier. Ms. Mohammed will be in Kinshasa until tomorrow and then she will go on to Nairobi. While there she will have meetings with senior government officials, and then, on 6 October, she will go to Cape Town, in South Africa, to address the Twelfth Annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture.
YEMEN
I know you wanted to ask the Secretary-General about Yemen at the stakeout but did not get a chance, and I can tell you that he is disappointed to see that the parties have not agreed to the new proposal for the extension and expansion of the truce put forth by Hans Grundberg, our UN Special Envoy. However, negotiations are still ongoing and will continue, as Mr. Grundberg explores options that are acceptable for both parties. The truce has directly benefited Yemeni civilians: major military activity stopped, including Saudi-led Coalition airstrikes and Houthi cross-border attacks; civilian casualties have dropped significantly; fuel imports through Hudaydah ports eased shortages; and international commercial flights out of Sana’a airport to Amman and other destinations have resumed. We urge the parties to maintain calm and refrain from provocations or any actions that could lead to an escalation of violence. We call on the parties to engage with each other and focus on finalizing negotiations. And you will have seen Mr. Grundberg issued a statement late last night on this current issue. He is currently in Oman in discussion with various parties.
MYANMAR
Turning to Myanmar, our colleagues there that they are concerned that ongoing hostilities across the country continue to endanger the lives and well-being of civilians.
More than a million people have now been displaced by conflict and insecurity since the military takeover in February of last year. In Rakhine, indiscriminate attacks, the use of landmines and mortar shelling, as well as tight security measures and access constraints are putting people’s lives in danger and preventing assistance from reaching those who actually need it. Nationwide, landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to claim lives and endanger civilians. Food security is also a major concern, as many families are not able to buy enough food due to a spike in prices and of basic commodities.
INDONESIA
You will have seen over the weekend we issued a statement in which the Secretary-General expressed his deep sadness at the tragic incidents that occurred at a soccer stadium in Malang, Indonesia.

UNIDOP 2022 is a call to action and opportunity, with globally representative older women, parliamentarians, and United Nations representatives offering multistakeholders dialogue on the resilience of living through and responding to climate disaster, conflict, or pandemic, experiencing and managing the physical and emotional disruption to losses of family, income, and social connectedness.
Panels will highlight relevant actions that include efforts toward inclusion of older persons, in particular older women, the protection of their human rights, and enabling the full and equal participation of older persons, in particular older women, in decision-making at all levels.
Objectives of UNIDOP 2022 New York Commemoration:
To highlight the resilience of older women in the face of socioeconomic, environmental, health and lifelong inequities.
To raise awareness of the importance of improving world-wide age- and gender-sensitive data collection and analysis in order to provide essential evidence for effective policies.
To call on Member States, United Nations Funds, Programmes, Specialized Agencies and other United Nations entities, as well as civil society to include older women in the center of all policies, ensuring gender equality, as described in Our Common Agenda; which represents the Secretary-General’s vision on the future of global cooperation.

United Nations Video: UN Chief on Climate Change | Hurricane Ian, Pakistan Flooding & More | United Nations
Secretary-General António Guterres today (3 Oct) told journalists that “while climate chaos gallops ahead, climate action has stalled,” and said that the upcoming COP27 in Sharm el-Shaikh “is critical – but we have a long way to go.”
Taking stock of recent climate events, Guterres said, “a third of Pakistan flooded. Europe’s hottest summer in 500 years. The Philippines hammered. The whole of Cuba in black-out. And here, in the United States, Hurricane Ian has delivered a brutal reminder that no country and no economy is immune from the climate crisis.”
The Secretary-General said, “the collective commitments of G20 governments are coming far too little and far too late. The actions of the wealthiest developed and emerging economies simply don’t add up. Taken together, current pledges and policies are shutting the door on our chance to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius, let alone meet the 1.5-degree goal.”
He said, “we are in a life-or-death struggle for our own safety today and our survival tomorrow.”
Guterres stressed that COP27 “is the place for all countries – led by the G-20 -- to show they are in this fight and in it together.” He urged leaders “to take full part in COP 27 and tell the world what climate action they will take nationally and globally.”
Leaders of the world can demonstrate through their presence and active participation that climate action truly is the top global priority that it must be.”
He highlighted the need for meaningful progress in addressing loss and damage beyond adaptation, as well as on finance for climate action..

Engineers are looking for a new destination for a rover that was supposed to go to Mars.
The vehicle was originally developed to help bring back rocks from Mars, but officials at the US and European space agencies (Nasa and Esa) axed it from the project.

Standing in the darkness of an abandoned medical clinic in the recently-liberated Ukrainian city of Izium, Mykola Mosyakyn remembers all too well the spot where he was tortured by Russian soldiers.
He is one of countless Ukrainians who were submitted to arbitrary and relentless torture at the hands of the occupying forces - an ordeal that went on for months.
Russian forces began pounding Izium with artillary on the 3rd of March and didn't stop for days.
A month later on the 1st of April, Russia claimed control of what was left of Izium after Ukrainian forces fell back, conceding defeat in the crumbling city.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."

Global Video: Are labour unions making a comeback in North America?
Throughout the pandemic, North Americans have been rethinking their relationship with work. In fact, a recently released survey found that about a quarter of Canadians have taken on a new job in the past few months.
Many more who have stayed at their post have begun thinking about ways to improve working conditions.
And then there's workers at places like Starbucks and Apple, some of whom have sought to form unions or join unions. In Canada, three Starbucks in B.C. have voted to join the United Steelworkers Union, as has a café in Calgary. Five Lethbridge Starbucks locations are awaiting the results of similar votes.
Meanwhile, unions have reported an increase in the number of calls from workers interested in joining a union, according to Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske.
“Those workers who are often service sector workers in restaurants, retail locations, have had to deal with the public, have not necessarily had access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic, have not had access to paid sick time. And quite frankly, their wages are not keeping up to inflation,” She explains.
Alyssa Julie explains what’s behind workers’ renewed push to unionize their workplaces and whether it’s likely to lead to a stronger labour movement.

Global Video: Ballroom culture: World’s 1st Global Black Pride LGBTQ+ celebrations
The world’s first in-person Global Black Pride (GBP) events were held in Toronto, exactly one month after Pride and overlapping with the city’s Caribbean Carnival.
Founded in 2020, it is an event that brings together Black 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across all continents. One of these events was the Black Pride Kiki Ball, co-hosted by the City of Toronto with the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance (TKBA).
In Canada, ballroom culture has exploded in recent years. Founded in 2010 in Toronto by Legendary Twysted Miyake-Mugler and Legendary Vixen, TKBA is a space to nurture the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ BIPOC youth facing barriers and trauma.
Started in New York during the 1960s, ballroom spaces were created by the queer and trans Black and Latinx community due to discrimination and a need for a safer nightlife. A function that hosts multiple competitive categories, each event typically consists of a DJ, a commentator, a judges panel, ballroom walkers and spectators coming together to celebrate one another and compete.
For the world’s first in-person GBP event, this global event celebrated the unique intersection of these diverse cultures, marking how far the movement has come over the course of 60 years. For those who may be hearing about it for the first time, what exactly is a ball and what does it mean for the community?

Global Video: “I feel very isolated”: People with disabilities face barriers accessing LGBTQ+ spaces
Disability is a reality for many Canadians. Yet, people with disabilities often struggle to access businesses, nightclubs and other spaces.
This is true in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community as well.
“I feel very isolated in a lot of those spaces because they’re not accessible,” disability awareness consultant Andrew Gurza tells Global News about hot spots in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, “The Village.”
“And if I can access the space a lot of the community doesn’t know how to receive me. Has never seen a disabled person like me in the space.”
Global News’ Alyssa Julie spoke to two disabled people in the queer community, who said physical barriers aren’t the only hurdle they encounter. Global News’ Alyssa Julie reports.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.
