SECRETARY-GENERAL/BURKINA FASO
In the statement issued today, the Secretary-General said he deplores the attack on a commercial convoy, escorted by the national armed forces and transporting essential commodities, to the town of Djibo, in Burkina Faso. The attack took place on 26 September near Gaskindé, in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso.
The Secretary-General expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people of Burkina Faso. He wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Secretary-General called on the Burkinabè authorities to spare no effort in identifying and bringing the perpetrators of this heinous attack to justice and calls on all parties to ensure that civilians are spared from the consequences of the conflict. The Secretary-General reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to continue to work with Burkina Faso and international partners to enhance the protection of civilians, address humanitarian challenges, and promote lasting peace and prosperity with respect for human rights.
BURKINA FASO/HUMANITARIAN
Further on Burkina Faso, the country continues to face a humanitarian crisis, with nearly one fifth of the population urgently in need of aid. Humanitarian needs remain significant, in particular in the Sahel, East, North-Central, and North regions. There are gaps in the provision of food, shelter and essential household items, as well as water, hygiene and sanitation.
As of June of this year, more than 1.5 million people are displaced in Burkina Faso as a consequence of the increasing insecurity in the country. Nearly two quarters of the displaced people are children.
Burkina Faso’s 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan seeks $805 million to help 3.8 million of the most vulnerable people, but it is only 30 per cent funded.
In 2022, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has allocated $16 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to tackle food security, protection, water and sanitation, health, nutrition, shelter and education needs in hard-to-reach areas.

“Racism continues to poison institutions, social structures, and everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality. And it continues to deny people their fundamental human rights. It destabilizes societies, undermines democracies, erodes the legitimacy of governments, and… the linkages between racism and gender inequality are unmistakable.”
As conflicts continue to erupt across the globe, causing people to flee, we have seen race-based discrimination at borders. As COVID-19 keeps attacking our communities, we have seen how certain racial groups have been hit much harder than others. As economies suffer, we have seen hate speech and violence directed at racial minorities.
We all have a role to play in fostering peace. And tackling racism is a crucial way to contribute.
We can work to dismantle the structures that entrench racism in our midst. We can support movements for equality and human rights everywhere. We can speak out against hate speech – both offline and online. We can promote anti-racism through education and reparatory justice.
The 2022 theme for the International Day of Peace is “End racism. There was no surprise in the results of these 'referenda'. A week after the hastily-organised votes were announced, Russian officials claimed overwhelming majorities in four occupied regions of Ukraine - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.
In Donetsk, the pro-Kremlin authorities say over 99% of people wanted to become part of Russia, and 98% in Luhansk.
Ukraine’s President Volodomyr Zelensky has vowed to protect the people in those four regions, which make up 15% of Ukraine’s territory.
The West has called the results a sham - and said they will not recognise their legitimacy.
Any annexation of territory will likely spark further sanctions.
In Kiev, the plan remains the same - Ukraine will push ahead with its offensive to retake areas lost to Russia earlier in the war.
But if Moscow has its way, any attempt to oust the occupiers from their sovereign territory will be seen as an act of aggression.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."

Global Video: Are labour unions making a comeback in North America?
Throughout the pandemic, North Americans have been rethinking their relationship with work. In fact, a recently released survey found that about a quarter of Canadians have taken on a new job in the past few months.
Many more who have stayed at their post have begun thinking about ways to improve working conditions.
And then there's workers at places like Starbucks and Apple, some of whom have sought to form unions or join unions. In Canada, three Starbucks in B.C. have voted to join the United Steelworkers Union, as has a café in Calgary. Five Lethbridge Starbucks locations are awaiting the results of similar votes.
Meanwhile, unions have reported an increase in the number of calls from workers interested in joining a union, according to Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske.
“Those workers who are often service sector workers in restaurants, retail locations, have had to deal with the public, have not necessarily had access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic, have not had access to paid sick time. And quite frankly, their wages are not keeping up to inflation,” She explains.
Alyssa Julie explains what’s behind workers’ renewed push to unionize their workplaces and whether it’s likely to lead to a stronger labour movement.

Global Video: Ballroom culture: World’s 1st Global Black Pride LGBTQ+ celebrations
The world’s first in-person Global Black Pride (GBP) events were held in Toronto, exactly one month after Pride and overlapping with the city’s Caribbean Carnival.
Founded in 2020, it is an event that brings together Black 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across all continents. One of these events was the Black Pride Kiki Ball, co-hosted by the City of Toronto with the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance (TKBA).
In Canada, ballroom culture has exploded in recent years. Founded in 2010 in Toronto by Legendary Twysted Miyake-Mugler and Legendary Vixen, TKBA is a space to nurture the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ BIPOC youth facing barriers and trauma.
Started in New York during the 1960s, ballroom spaces were created by the queer and trans Black and Latinx community due to discrimination and a need for a safer nightlife. A function that hosts multiple competitive categories, each event typically consists of a DJ, a commentator, a judges panel, ballroom walkers and spectators coming together to celebrate one another and compete.
For the world’s first in-person GBP event, this global event celebrated the unique intersection of these diverse cultures, marking how far the movement has come over the course of 60 years. Global Video: “I feel very isolated”: People with disabilities face barriers accessing LGBTQ+ spaces
Disability is a reality for many Canadians. Yet, people with disabilities often struggle to access businesses, nightclubs and other spaces.
This is true in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community as well.
“I feel very isolated in a lot of those spaces because they’re not accessible,” disability awareness consultant Andrew Gurza tells Global News about hot spots in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, “The Village.”
“And if I can access the space a lot of the community doesn’t know how to receive me. Has never seen a disabled person like me in the space.”
Global News’ Alyssa Julie spoke to two disabled people in the queer community, who said physical barriers aren’t the only hurdle they encounter. Global News’ Alyssa Julie reports.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.
