United Nations Video: United Nations Guided Tours Celebrates 70 Years | United Nations
When the United Nations Headquarters opened its doors to the public in 1952, visitors from around the world could take a tour and get a chance to see, hear and feel the UN in action. The tour became immensely popular and for the last 70 years, the UN has welcomed more than 42 million people into its headquarters. The tours are led by multilingual tour guides who have been the face and voice of the United Nations.
Meet Mr. Jacky Tong of the UN Guided Tours and hear him explain!
The United Nations Department of Global Communications celebrates today the seventieth anniversary of its Guided Tours operation, the same day that the doors of the Organization’s Headquarters in New York City were opened to the public in 1952.
To mark the occasion, an exhibit on the history and the role of the tour guides as “Ambassadors to the Public” is on view in the United Nations Visitors Lobby, available also in digital format. The United Nations Postal Administration has issued a special commemorative stamp sheet for purchase at the stamp shop.
For seven decades, visitors from around the world have toured United Nations Headquarters, giving them the opportunity to see, hear and feel diplomacy in action. Escorted by guides well-versed in international affairs, visitors walk through corridors buzzing with diplomats and international civil servants, learn about pressing geopolitical issues, and while seated in the General Assembly Hall, reflect on our world’s need for international cooperation.
“Our multilingual tour guides have been the face and voice of the United Nations to over 42 million visitors from around the world,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “We celebrate their seventieth anniversary and honour their vital ongoing mission to enhance understanding of the essential work of the United Nations.”
The one-hour Guided Tour is conducted in 13 languages by a team of tour guides from 17 countries. As per tradition, the tour guides have been clothed by leading designers, from Edith Head, Christian Dior and Benetton in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, to Elie Tahari from 2017 to the present.

United Nations Video: World AIDS Day 2022: "Equalize access to rights, equalize access to services" - Press Conference
Press conference by Dr. César Núñez, Director of the UNAIDS New York Office, on World AIDS Day (marked on 1 December).
A top UNAIDS official said, “Equalize access to rights, equalize access to services, equalize access to resources, equalize access to the best science and medicine. This is how we will end AIDS.”
Briefing reporters today (29 Nov) ahead of World AIDS Day marked on 1 December, Dr. César Núñez, Director of the UNAIDS New York Office, presented the new UNAIDS report "Dangerous Inequalities," which shows that inequalities are blocking the end of the AIDS pandemic.
He said, “we call the world's attention to a painful reality. Currently, we are not on track to end AIDS by 2030. And the reason is inequalities. But there is good news by equalizing, we can end AIDS.”
UNAIDS set out earlier this year that the AIDS response is in danger, with rising new infections and continuing deaths in many parts of the world.
Today in its latest report, UNAIDS shows that urgent action to tackle inequalities can get the AIDS response on track.
The study documents three key inequalities on which immediate action is possible and urgent: Gender inequalities and harmful masculinities driving HIV; Stark lack of progress for key populations, driven by inequalities that undermine the overall AIDS response; Inequalities for children whose lives must matter more than their market share.
According to the report, worsening financial constraints are making it more difficult to address those inequalities.
The report also shows how world leaders can tackle those inequalities and calls on them to be courageous to follow what the evidence reveals.
Núñez explained, “HIV has not gone away. In the midst of a crisis of debt, austerity, and inequality hitting developing countries, cuts in aid for global health are not strategic. Now it's not the time to step away. It is a time to step up. There's some international solidarity that will reduce inequalities in financing and make amazing gains against aids, including bringing more than 20 million people on to life-saving treatment.”

A senior appointment. Today, the Secretary-General is announcing that Oscar Fernandez-Taranco of Argentina will take over the job as Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination.
He succeeds Robert Piper of Australia. The Secretary-General is deeply grateful for Mr. Piper’s dedicated service and commitment and his steadfast stewardship in operationalizing the new Development Coordination Office.
Mr. Fernandez-Taranco has over 30 years of experience in the UN System, having worked at Headquarters and in the field - managing development, political, peacebuilding, human rights and humanitarian operations in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific as well as Europe. He is currently Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination. And we give a big hearty congratulations to our friend Oscar.
ETHIOPIA
The Secretary-General is on his way to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, where he will arrive in the coming hours. As we told you yesterday, he will take part tomorrow in the 6th session of the African Union-UN annual conference. Those discussions will be co-chaired by the Secretary-General and the Chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
In Addis Ababa, he will also have an early morning meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and he will also meet the Federal President of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde.
Also on Ethiopia, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed conflict, Virginia Gamba, today said the peace agreement brokered by the African Union is a milestone that provides an important opportunity to prioritize the protection of children, including by incorporating their rights and needs in the mediation process and peace discussions.

Stephanie Frappart will be the first woman to referee at a men's World Cup in Thursday's group-stage game between Costa Rica and Germany.
The 38-year-old Frenchwoman will be joined by assistant referees Brazil's Neuza Back and Mexican Karen Diaz Medina at Al Bayt Stadium, forming the first all-female on-field officiating team in the history of the tournament.
She is one of three female referees selected to officiate in the tournament, the first time it has happened in a men's World Cup.

The French baguette has been added to Unesco’s "intangible cultural heritage" list.
The body announced it had added "artisanal know-how and culture of baguette bread" to its list of 600 other items, including traditional tea making in China.
Its inclusion "celebrates the French way of life," Unesco chief Audrey Asoulay said.
France is said to produce some 16 million baguettes a day.
However, in recent years, the baguette has been in decline as traditional bakeries struggle against the rise of things like large supermarkets and the increasing popularity of sourdough.

Global Video: Breast cancer survivors say issues like early menopause, loss of identity often overlooked
Just days ahead of her 40th birthday, Hilary Boswell received a terrifying diagnosis – She had breast cancer.
She received a unilateral mastectomy, a surgery she didn’t necessarily want but felt pressured into by her surgeon. It left her with one breast and, she says, it changed the way she saw herself.
“I remember struggling so much with the idea of walking around with one boob,” she said. “I just really felt like I knew what I wanted… and yeah, I wish I had done it, “ she added, referring to a double mastectomy.
Like Boswell, other cancer survivors sometimes struggle to accept the changes brought on by surgery or chemotherapy – such as early menopause, or loss of libido. And they don’t always get the support they need.
As Alyssa Julie reports in our series Against all Odds, some survivors and experts are asking health professionals to shed more light on the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the body and the mind.

Global Video: Outside the margins: BIPOC and LGBTQ2 breast cancer patients rewrite the narrative
People from racialized and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are underrepresented in the institution of cancer care, and they’re slipping through the cracks because of it.
“I really felt like my issues didn’t matter. And I didn’t feel confident in making a decision about a life-changing surgery because I didn’t see myself represented,” said Michelle Audoin, the founder of Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. “The fact that I didn’t see myself in this space and my questions weren’t being addressed, it led to depression.”
For breast cancer, a reproductive cancer, the disparity can be especially apparent for the latter group. One thing is clear: it’s time to rewrite the narrative of what a typical cancer survivor looks like.
To do so, members of the community across Canada are fighting against these gaps, from diversifying what breast cancer looks like to writing a graphic memoir.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."

Global Video: Are labour unions making a comeback in North America?
Throughout the pandemic, North Americans have been rethinking their relationship with work. In fact, a recently released survey found that about a quarter of Canadians have taken on a new job in the past few months.
Many more who have stayed at their post have begun thinking about ways to improve working conditions.
And then there's workers at places like Starbucks and Apple, some of whom have sought to form unions or join unions. In Canada, three Starbucks in B.C. have voted to join the United Steelworkers Union, as has a café in Calgary. Five Lethbridge Starbucks locations are awaiting the results of similar votes.
Meanwhile, unions have reported an increase in the number of calls from workers interested in joining a union, according to Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske.
“Those workers who are often service sector workers in restaurants, retail locations, have had to deal with the public, have not necessarily had access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic, have not had access to paid sick time. And quite frankly, their wages are not keeping up to inflation,” She explains.
Alyssa Julie explains what’s behind workers’ renewed push to unionize their workplaces and whether it’s likely to lead to a stronger labour movement.
