TÜRKIYE/SYRIA
In a statement issued this morning, the Secretary-General said that he was deeply saddened to hear of the extensive loss of life caused by the earthquake which impacted southern Türkiye and northern Syria earlier today. More than 1,500 people have reportedly been killed and many more injured and the toll continues to rise as rescue efforts continue.
The Secretary-General said that our hearts go out to the people of Türkiye and Syria in this hour of tragedy. He sent his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The United Nations is fully committed to supporting the response. The UN teams are on the ground assessing the needs and trying to provide assistance. The UN counts on the international community to help the thousands of families hit by this disaster, many of whom were already in dire need of humanitarian aid in areas where access is a challenge.
In a number of statements, various UN officials, both at the headquarters and in the region, also expressed their condolences.
TÜRKIYE/SYRIA HUMANITARIAN
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today noted that this is Türkiye's most powerful earthquake recorded since 1939, and that at least 78 aftershocks were reported followed by a second earthquake of 7.5 magnitude. The earthquake has heavily impacted north-west Syria where 4.1 million people, most of them women and children, were already relying on humanitarian assistance. 224 buildings were completely destroyed and at least 325 partially damaged in 17 subdistricts. That is according to initial information we ae getting from local authorities.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the sub-districts of Harim, Atmeh,Sarmada, Atareb, and Kafr Takharim are among the worst hit areas. UN partners have reported that their offices and warehouses have been damaged and hospitals are already overwhelmed. There is an urgent need for tents and non-food items, in particular blankets, heating fuel, stoves and plastic sheets.
The UN, along with its partners, are monitoring the situation on the ground, despite the power shortages and chronic disruptions to telecommunications. Several partners have launched assessments and results are expected in the coming days. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have a total stock of some 2,000 tents and approximately 1,700 Non-Food Item kits pre-positioned inside north-west Syria. UNHCR added that 1,000 additional tents are available in a warehouse in Gaziantep, southern Türkiye. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also released trauma kits from its warehouses to at least 16 hospitals in the north-west Syria. The UN is also looking to mobilize emergency funds in the region.
The earthquake is expected to disrupt aid operations in north-west Syria, given the impact on roads, the supply chain and logistics facilities.
The UN, along with its humanitarian partners, have been assisting 2.7 million people per month in northwest Syria via cross-border air deliveries. That is before the earthquake.
Regarding our UN staff over there, there are more than 700 staff members based in the earthquake-affected areas. In Hatay, the UN has 2 international and 52 national staff members. A headcount in the area is ongoing.
In Gaziantep, the UN has 154 international and 376 national staff members. It appears that all are accounted for.
In Syria, all staff are safe and accounted for. There are 44 international and 343 national staff members in the affected area. Headcounts were also initiated in Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan. All staff members there are accounted for.

SECRETARY-GENERAL
On Monday at 10 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, will present his priorities for the year to the General Assembly. The remarks will be live on webtv and today, at 2 p.m. there will be a background briefing on the remarks in the briefing room.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL/TRAVELS
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, concluded her trip to Rome and to Vatican City. Today she met with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani. In the meeting, it was announced that Italy would host the UN Food Systems Stocktaking Moment, which will take place in Rome from 24 to 26 July. The aim of the high-level meeting is to provide opportunities for countries to report on progress made at the national level since the UN Food Systems Summit in 2021, as well as their contributions to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
Ms. Mohammed also met today with the Undersecretaries for Multilateral Affairs of the Holy See with whom she discussed the importance of multilateralism and the need for the UN to remain the global townhall for our global village.
They expressed that the UN must continue to give voice to all.
The Deputy Secretary-General also met with the leaders of the UN Rome-based Agencies, and those are the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
UKRAINE
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) say that yesterday, an inter-agency convoy of five trucks delivered medications, materials for emergency shelter repairs, tool kits, hygiene items and solar lamps to the Zaporizhzhia region in the south-east of the country. The supplies are intended for people in the Huliaipole community, where around 3,000 people remain close to the front line. They are exposed to regular shelling, and their access to basic services is obviously very much disrupted.
Since March of last year, the residents have had no electricity as power stations were damaged by fighting and cannot be repaired due to the ongoing hostilities. Because there is no power, water facilities cannot operate, and water has to be delivered in bottles or pumped from wells. Tools for emergency repairs are urgently needed for the damaged homes in the harsh winter.
The supplies are being provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the World Health Organization (WHO). With support from local community representatives and volunteers, it’s distributed directly to the people in need.
This is the second convoy this week to reach communities in acute need on the frontlines after a first convoy reached Donetsk region on the 31st of last month.
FOOD PRICE INDEX
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today released its monthly Food Price Index for January and said that world food commodity prices declined in January for the tenth consecutive month. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.2 points in January, that’s 0.8 percent lower than the previous month, that’s December of 2022.
The FAO says that low domestic prices could result in a small cutback in wheat plantings in the Russian Federation, the world’s largest exporter, while severe war-induced impacts in Ukraine are estimated to reduce winter wheat area plantings by about 40 percent.

United Nations Video: Iraq, Ethiopia, Mali & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (2 February 2023)
Noon briefing by Florencia Soto Niño, Associate Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
Highlights:
- Iraq
- Ethiopia
- Mali
- Deputy-Secretary-General/Rome

- World Wetlands Day
IRAQ
This morning, the Special Representative for the Secretary-General to Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, briefed the Security Council on the situation in the country. She underlined the importance that political parties and other actors prioritize the country’s interest above all, stressing that at the end of the day, it remains a joint responsibility.
The Special Representative also conveyed to the Security Council a sense of hope that the confirmation of Iraq’s new government will provide an opportunity to structurally address the many pressing issues facing the country and its people, and a sense of urgency for Iraq’s political class to seize the brief window of opportunity, and to finally lift the country out of recurring cycles of instability and fragility.
ETHIOPIA
In Ethiopia, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) notes that access in the north continues to improve, and the UN has expanded its operations in Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions, but some pockets remain hard to reach. Since the Cessation of Hostilities agreement in mid-November, more than 127,000 tons of food have been brought into Tigray, reaching more than 3.8 million people.
Meanwhile, OCHA notes that fighting in parts of southern Amhara and neighbouring areas of Oromia region have led to significant displacement in Amhara’s North Shewa, South Wello and West Gojam zones. Humanitarian partners are mobilizing food, shelter and other relief to people in need.
In the southern and eastern parts of Ethiopia, the historic drought that has gripped the wider Horn of Africa continues. The UN and its partners aim to reach 17 million people with food, water, health and agriculture support, among other assistance.
OCHA also notes that the cholera outbreak in parts of Oromia and Somali regions has seen more than 1,000 cases reported to date. Close to one million people are considered at high risk. An oral cholera vaccination campaign has been launched, and 33 per cent of the people they intend to assist have been reached so far.
Given the scale of the needs, additional funding is critical. Financial requirements for this year are being finalized and expected to remain high.
Last year, the Ethiopia humanitarian appeal received less than half the $3.3 billion that were required.
MALI
The UN and its humanitarian partners today launched an appeal for $751 million to meet the urgent needs of 5.7 million people in Mali, over half of whom are women and children. The launch was hosted by the Government of Mali and co-chaired by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Alain Noudehou.
The appeal aims to mobilize the necessary funding for the Humanitarian Response Plan 2023 for the country. Mali faces a multidimensional crisis fueled by insecurity, conflict, climate change and lack of access to basic social services.
As of December, over 400,000 people, mainly children and women, have been displaced due to increasing insecurity in the regions of Bandiagara, Mopti, Gao, Timbuktu, Ségou and Menaka.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the humanitarian needs have increased by 17 per cent compared to last year.

BBC News Video: Andrew Tate was ‘coercive’, says ex-girlfriend – BBC News
A British woman who says she was in a relationship with the controversial media influencer Andrew Tate has told the BBC how he encouraged her to work for his webcam company, before becoming controlling.
Andrew Tate - and his brother Tristan - are in custody in Romania while police investigate allegations of rape and trafficking.
Prosecutors allege the pair recruited victims by seducing them and falsely claiming they wanted to have a relationship.
The BBC has seen messages and listened to voice recordings sent to Sophie – not her real name - from Tate that appear to support her claims of controlling behaviour.
The BBC put these allegations to Tate through his lawyer, but Mateea Petrescu, who handles media requests for the Tate brothers, said they would not comment on the claims.

BBC News Video: ‘God help us’ pleas after Turkey-Syria earthquake as hospitals are overwhelmed - BBC Newsnight
The devastation in Turkey and Northern Syria from two earthquakes is on a scale unmatched in decades and it covers an area already ravaged by war, poverty and a refugee crisis.
Thousands are dead and the number of people who've lost their lives is likely to increase dramatically. This was a region where there hadn't been an earthquake for more than 100 years, and there was no indication one was coming, so the level of preparedness would be less than in areas used to tremors.
President Erdogan of Turkey said today this was the biggest disaster to hit the country since 1939.
Meanwhile in Northern Syria, the damage hit an area where the infrastructure and health systems have been wrecked by years of war, with doctors telling the BBC that they are deciding at the doors of the hospital which patients they have the capacity to try to save.
Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban reports.

Global Video: Mummering: Newfoundland's unique holiday tradition comes roaring back
This past weekend in St. John’s Newfoundland, hundreds of people hit the streets for the Atlantic province’s annual Mummers Parade.
As part of this festive tradition, people gather up old clothes that have been lying around the house –tablecloths and oversized shirts are a favourite – and assemble a “mummer’s rig” or costume.
Originally, mummering was a house-visiting tradition. It first appeared in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1800’s, though the practice dates back much further than that. Mummers would visit their neighbours in disguise, looking for beer and a bite to eat.
Alyssa Julie has more on the history of mummering - and the dark parts of its past.

Global Video: Breast cancer survivors say issues like early menopause, loss of identity often overlooked
Just days ahead of her 40th birthday, Hilary Boswell received a terrifying diagnosis – She had breast cancer.
She received a unilateral mastectomy, a surgery she didn’t necessarily want but felt pressured into by her surgeon. It left her with one breast and, she says, it changed the way she saw herself.
“I remember struggling so much with the idea of walking around with one boob,” she said. “I just really felt like I knew what I wanted… and yeah, I wish I had done it, “ she added, referring to a double mastectomy.
Like Boswell, other cancer survivors sometimes struggle to accept the changes brought on by surgery or chemotherapy – such as early menopause, or loss of libido. And they don’t always get the support they need.
As Alyssa Julie reports in our series Against all Odds, some survivors and experts are asking health professionals to shed more light on the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the body and the mind.

Global Video: Outside the margins: BIPOC and LGBTQ2 breast cancer patients rewrite the narrative
People from racialized and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are underrepresented in the institution of cancer care, and they’re slipping through the cracks because of it.
“I really felt like my issues didn’t matter. And I didn’t feel confident in making a decision about a life-changing surgery because I didn’t see myself represented,” said Michelle Audoin, the founder of Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. “The fact that I didn’t see myself in this space and my questions weren’t being addressed, it led to depression.”
For breast cancer, a reproductive cancer, the disparity can be especially apparent for the latter group. One thing is clear: it’s time to rewrite the narrative of what a typical cancer survivor looks like.
To do so, members of the community across Canada are fighting against these gaps, from diversifying what breast cancer looks like to writing a graphic memoir.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."
Global's Alexia Kapralos and Katherine Cheng have some of their stories.
