SECRETARY-GENERAL/CANADA
Today, in Montreal, in a press conference on the sidelines of COP15, the Secretary-General reiterated the urgent need to address biodiversity. He called on Member States and the private sector to move effectively and focus on the future of humanity’s relationship with nature. “Ecosystems have become playthings of profit,” the Secretary-General said, “and human activities are laying waste to once-thriving forests, jungles, farmland, oceans, rivers, seas and lakes.” Humanity’s war on nature, he said, is ultimately a war on ourselves.
The Secretary-General added that climate action and the protection of biodiversity are two sides of the same coin. In response to questions, he noted the linkages between climate change and the loss of biodiversity and stressed the need to deal with both.
Earlier in the day, the Secretary-General met with a number of other constituencies, including local and indigenous populations, women’s groups and youth groups among others. He listened to their concerns regarding the loss of biodiversity and related issues, especially human rights.
The Secretary-General also had meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
SECURITY COUNCIL
This morning, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, briefed Council members. He said that the dynamics in the country over the past couple of weeks, including the signing of the political framework agreement, are a sign that Sudan may find a way out of the crisis and embark on a more sustainable transitional phase.
However, Mr. Perthes also warned that the situation remains precarious, with thousands having been displaced by violence this year and many having suffered the impacts of floods and inflation. He called on Council members and the international community to support Sudan in a successful and peaceful transition that is Sudanese-owned and led.

The United Nations top humanitarian official today (6 Dec) said attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure “have left millions of people without access to heat, electricity and water, adding another dangerous dimension to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war.”
Martin Griffiths, who is the United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said, “in preparation for the winter, humanitarians have provided more than 630,000 civilians with different kinds of direct winter assistance, and 400 generators have been distributed to critical facilities.”
He said, “since October, the sustained attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have created a new level of need that impacts the whole country and exacerbates and increases the needs caused by the war.”
The scale of the destruction of the electrical and heating infrastructure, Griffiths added, “requires the international community's enhanced support to the Government of Ukraine beyond what humanitarians could provide.”

SECRETARY-GENERAL/CANADA
The Secretary-General arrived in Montreal yesterday afternoon, where he will attend later today and tomorrow the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, otherwise known as COP15.
Earlier today, the Secretary-General attended one of the side events organized by the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and other youth groups. In an informal discussion, the Secretary-General underscored to the assembled group that the leadership of young people is critical to the planet’s survival. He told them they were on the front lines to rescue humankind in its battle against nature. He encouraged them to increase their involvement, not just by demonstrating but also by using
all the available tools of citizenship – especially by voting and getting involved in politics.
This morning, the Secretary-General met with Huang Runqiu, the Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China. Mr. Runqiu also serves as the President of the COP15. As you will recall, the first part of COP15 was held in Kunming, China, in October of last year. This second part will include the continuation of negotiations by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The Secretary-General also met with the leaders of all regional groups present in Montreal and was briefed on the state of the negotiations. He encouraged them to work towards strengthening our efforts to protect our biodiversity.
In the remarks, to be delivered at the opening ceremony of the Conference – at around 3:15pm this afternoon - the Secretary-General will underscore the importance of making peace with nature, which is our life support system. He will also warn that if our bottomless appetite for unchecked and unequal economic growth continues, we will risk facing mass extinction.
The Secretary-General will also call on countries and the private sector to develop bold action plans that protect biodiversity and support sustainable practices. And he will reiterate his call for developed countries to provide financial support for developing countries, many of which are custodians of the world’s natural wealth.
Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will meet with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, before heading back to New York.
SECURITY COUNCIL/UKRAINE
This morning, the Security Council held a meeting on Ukraine. Briefing Council members, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said that the attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including power stations and heating plants, have left millions of people without access to heat, electricity, and water, adding another dangerous dimension to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war. In Ukraine today, the ability of civilians to survive is under attack, he said.
The Emergency Relief Coordinator stressed that the humanitarian community remains committed, still, to stay and deliver. He noted that almost 690 humanitarian partners – the majority of which are local organizations – have provided life-critical aid and protection services to 13.5 million people.
According to Mr. Griffiths, over the past few months, in preparation for the winter, humanitarians have provided more than 630,000 civilians with different kinds of direct winter assistance, and 400 generators have been distributed to critical facilities. He noted that while there have been some improvements in humanitarian access, the biggest challenge remains the impediments to reaching areas in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
SUDAN
In a statement issued yesterday, the Secretary-General welcomed the signing of a framework agreement between civilian political forces and the military in Sudan. He hopes that this can pave the way for the return to a civilian-led transition in the country. He calls on all Sudanese stakeholders to work without delay on the next phase of the transition process to address outstanding issues with a view to achieving a lasting, inclusive political settlement.
The Secretary-General reaffirms that the United Nations will continue to support the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democracy, peace and sustainable development.

Security Council Briefing by Christian Ritscher, Special Adviser to head the Investigative Team to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable for acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Iraq, on Promotion of the Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
UN senior official Christian Ritscher said, “one of our key goals is to support Iraq in playing a leading role in holding ISIL members accountable for international crimes,” adding that “UNITAD is committed to building capacities of the judiciary in Iraq to work towards fair and just trials in accordance with applicable standards of the United Nations.”
Special Adviser and the head of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD), Christian Ritscher today (05 Dec) delivered the ninth report of his office.
Over the last reporting period, his team continued to advance its investigations into international crimes committed by ISIL against all communities of Iraq.
Ritscher highlighted some examples of the progress made. He said that a key outcome has been the completion of the case assessment focused on crimes committed against the Christian community in Iraq. Evidence collected and analysis conducted thus far substantiate preliminary findings from his last report that ISIL commissioned acts such as seizing of properties, looting and destruction of churches, the commission of sexual violence against, and enslavement and forcible religious conversions of members of the Christian community.
He said, “these acts constitute crimes against humanity and war crimes, including but not limited to forcible transfer, persecution, pillage, sexual violence and slavery, and other inhumane acts, such as forced conversion as well as intentional destruction of cultural heritage and religious sides protected under international humanitarian law.”
The Special Adviser continued, “in this respect, the team identified a number of ISIL leaders and members originating from areas nearby but also from foreign countries that considerably participated in these attacks.”
He also said that his team‘s investigations into the development and use of chemical and biological weapons by ISIL have “notably progressed.”
Ritscher explained, “evidence collected continues to support that ISIL manufactured and produced chemical rockets and mortars, ammunition, warheads and improvised explosive devices, in addition to the development, testing, weaponization and deployment of a range of chemical agents highlighted in my last report.”
He also said, “so far, the evidence obtained shows that religious and cultural sites were either intentionally destroyed by ISIL, or taken over and occupied, sometimes for military purposes. This resulted in severe damage or destruction to these sites. While the motives and methods adopted by the perpetrators are still being reviewed and analyzed, it appears that explosives and heavy equipment were used to destroy many of those heritage sites.”

Global Video: Breast cancer survivors say issues like early menopause, loss of identity often overlooked
Just days ahead of her 40th birthday, Hilary Boswell received a terrifying diagnosis – She had breast cancer.
She received a unilateral mastectomy, a surgery she didn’t necessarily want but felt pressured into by her surgeon. It left her with one breast and, she says, it changed the way she saw herself.
“I remember struggling so much with the idea of walking around with one boob,” she said. “I just really felt like I knew what I wanted… and yeah, I wish I had done it, “ she added, referring to a double mastectomy.
Like Boswell, other cancer survivors sometimes struggle to accept the changes brought on by surgery or chemotherapy – such as early menopause, or loss of libido. And they don’t always get the support they need.
As Alyssa Julie reports in our series Against all Odds, some survivors and experts are asking health professionals to shed more light on the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the body and the mind.

Global Video: Outside the margins: BIPOC and LGBTQ2 breast cancer patients rewrite the narrative
People from racialized and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are underrepresented in the institution of cancer care, and they’re slipping through the cracks because of it.
“I really felt like my issues didn’t matter. And I didn’t feel confident in making a decision about a life-changing surgery because I didn’t see myself represented,” said Michelle Audoin, the founder of Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. “The fact that I didn’t see myself in this space and my questions weren’t being addressed, it led to depression.”
For breast cancer, a reproductive cancer, the disparity can be especially apparent for the latter group. One thing is clear: it’s time to rewrite the narrative of what a typical cancer survivor looks like.
To do so, members of the community across Canada are fighting against these gaps, from diversifying what breast cancer looks like to writing a graphic memoir.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."

Global Video: Are labour unions making a comeback in North America?
Throughout the pandemic, North Americans have been rethinking their relationship with work. In fact, a recently released survey found that about a quarter of Canadians have taken on a new job in the past few months.
Many more who have stayed at their post have begun thinking about ways to improve working conditions.
And then there's workers at places like Starbucks and Apple, some of whom have sought to form unions or join unions. In Canada, three Starbucks in B.C. have voted to join the United Steelworkers Union, as has a café in Calgary. Five Lethbridge Starbucks locations are awaiting the results of similar votes.
Meanwhile, unions have reported an increase in the number of calls from workers interested in joining a union, according to Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske.
“Those workers who are often service sector workers in restaurants, retail locations, have had to deal with the public, have not necessarily had access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic, have not had access to paid sick time. And quite frankly, their wages are not keeping up to inflation,” She explains.
Alyssa Julie explains what’s behind workers’ renewed push to unionize their workplaces and whether it’s likely to lead to a stronger labour movement.
