The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Moustapha Malick Fall, said the UN is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, supporting the government on a “massive undertaking that can help the development of the country to move forward.” ________________________________________________________________________________ The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Moustapha Malick Fall, today (14 Jun) said the UN is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, supporting the government on a “massive undertaking that can help the development of the country to move forward.” Briefing journalists in New York on the situation in the country, Fall said, “the reform that has been taken has come with courageous measures,” including an emphasis on cash transfers instead of subsidies. He said subsidies were “not impacting very much in the well-being of the people of Nigeria, because sometimes we subsidize fuel, you subsidize food prices, and then it goes to the neighbour country. And because of the depreciation of the naira, maybe dealers would make much better margin when they go to those things.” The resident Coordinator explained that a new loan from the World Bank will allow the government “to create what we call a kind of increased and consolidated safety net.” He noted that part of the loan, 800 million US dollars, “will go to cash transfer program, which will enable the government to increase the number of households that are benefiting from the social support from 3 million households to 15 million households.” On the security situation, Fall said, “what we have seen now is increased commitment from the government to protect the IDP, but not to protect them only in terms of security. But also, to provide them with livelihood to put a return policy or a reintegration policy or a resettlement policy.” He noted that the conflict with Boko Haram started in 2009, with high levels of displacement in 2015 and 2016 and “you have people who have been living in those IDP site, I mean, for like nine years solely depending on humanitarian assistance.” Nigeria’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ is a comprehensive 8-point plan to tackle poverty in Nigeria through sustainable development and improved living standards, focusing on food security, poverty alleviation, economic growth, job creation and access to capital, inclusivity, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption.

High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu today (14 Jun) reported to the Security Council that “the provision of military assistance and transfers of arms and ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces have continued,” while states are “transferring, or planning to transfer,” weapons to the Russian armed forces “and that these weapons have been used in Ukraine.” Arms transferred to Ukraine include “heavy conventional weapons such as battle tanks, armoured combat vehicles, combat aircraft, helicopters, large calibre artillery systems, missile systems and uncrewed combat aerial vehicles, as well as remotely operated munitions, small arms and light weapons and their ammunition,” while the Russian Federation has reportedly received, “weapons such as uncrewed aerial vehicles, ballistic missiles and ammunition.” Nakamitsu warned about the “inherent risk of diversion of the equipment to unauthorized end users which raises serious concerns about the potential escalation of violence.” She said, “addressing the risk of diversion of weapons and ammunition is essential for preventing further instability and insecurity in Ukraine, the region, and beyond,” which requires “supply chain transparency and cooperation and information exchange between importing transit and exporting states.” Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said, “the US as part of its assistance to Ukraine is giving billions in loans which is to the benefit of its own military industrial complex, maintaining its super profits. An ocean away they are steering their European vassal and egging them on in their direct confrontation with Russia. As for Europe, which has lost even the modicum of the geopolitical independence it used to have, is blindly following the course dictated by Washington.” Nebenzya said, “do not believe the duplicitous promises of the organizers of the pow wow in Bürgenstock,” referring to the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, to be held in Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland next week. He said, “this is just a primitive attempt to set another ultimatum for Russia, indirectly signing everyone who attends this closed door meeting up for that ultimatum.” The Russian Ambassador said, “the striking hypocrisy is blatantly obvious. How can you talk about peace if the organizers of this conference are on the one hand, convening the pseudo peaceful conference and on the other hand, sending growing supplies of weapons to kill, and at the same time giving the green light for the use of those weapons on Russian territory.” US Ambassador Robert A. Wood told the Council that the transfer of ballistic missiles and other arms and related material from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the Russian Federation “are clear violations of Security Council resolutions.” Wood said the United States has published material “showing a visual comparison of images from DPRK state media and images of missile debris from Kharkiv, confirming Russia used DPRK missiles against Ukraine.” For his part Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya said, “while spreading the nonsense that the possession of arms by the defending party makes peace elusive, Russia itself continues to receive weapons from rogue states like Iran and North Korea. Pyongyang has already reportedly sent to Russia more than 10,000 shipping containers that could hold nearly 5 million artillery shells.” Moreover, he said, “Russia resource to press-ganging foreign nationals into its occupation forces in Ukraine by threatening those already in Russia or deceiving those they recruit from abroad.”

The Yemen-based Houthi rebels are ramping up their attacks in the Red Sea.  A missile strike from the militant group set fire to a commercial cargo ship this week. One mariner onboard the Verbena ship was severely wounded; he was flown to another nearby ship for treatment.  The Houthis say it was ‘in retaliation to the crimes committed against our people in the Gaza Strip, and in response to the American-British aggression against our country’. The attack marked the second direct hit by the Houthis on a merchant ship in two days with more than 50 strikes being launched in the Red Sea since November. The group is also reportedly holding 17 UN aid workers hostage, saying that they are members of an American-Israeli spy network .  The US Navy’s campaign against the Houthis has become one of the most intense sea battles since the Second World War. Despite its superiority in firepower, the Navy faces almost daily attacks by the Iran-backed militia. The Houthis say they launched this campaign in response to the Israel-Gaza war and claim to have only been targeting ships with links to the US or Israel since the conflict began. Their actions have disrupted global shipping and increased international supply chain costs. This dramatic footage from June shows that intense fighting continues in the Gaza Strip, even as international mediators continue to push for a truce. The IDF offensive in Rafah aims to eliminate the “remaining Hamas battalions” in the south. But this month also saw an assault on the central city of Deir El-Balah, while in the north Israel continues to trade blows with Hezbollah over the Lebanese border. Footage released by the military wing of Hamas shows that they are still limited to guerilla tactics. Mortars, sniper rifles and RPGs are used to strike isolated Israeli troops and vehicles. But Hamas has also made use of booby-trapped buildings, like this one in Rafah. The IDF takes advantage of air superiority where possible to eliminate threats. The Israelis are also prepared to take more risks to reclaim hostages. A recent raid on Nuseirat saw the return of four captives, but reportedly resulted in the death of 274 Palestinians, many of them women and children. Canada's capital gains tax increase comes into effect on June 25. The federal government has tabled legislation to increase the inclusion rate from one-half to two-thirds on capital gains above $250,000 per year for individuals, and on all capital gains realized by corporations and trusts. The tax hike is projected to pull in roughly $19 billion in new revenue. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Canada needs the revenue to invest in pharmacare, dental care, childcare and the green energy transition. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said his party will oppose the increase, arguing it disproportionately affects wealthy people and big corporations. He claimed the tax increase will worsen the country's family doctor shortage because it will levy higher taxes on a physician's retirement savings — possibly driving these doctors to retire now or move their practices abroad. In an interview with CBC’s Power & Politics, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explains why he supports the hike. #Canada #cdnpoli Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/news »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Follow CBC News on TikTok: https://bit.ly/3TnHioe Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Subscribe to CBC News on Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3leaWsr Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app for Android: http://bit.ly/1XxuozZ »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» For more than 80 years, CBC News has been the source Canadians turn to, to keep them informed about their communities, their country and their world.
