Growing or shrinking? Latest trends about World’s Population | World Population Prospects 2024
Play Video: Growing or shrinking? Latest trends about World’s Population | World Population Prospects 2024

Press Briefing by Mr. Navid Hanif, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), along with Mr. John Wilmoth, Director, Population Division, UN DESA and Ms. Clare Menozzi, Senior Population Affairs Officer, Population Division, UN DESA. They brief journalists on the World Population Prospects 2024: Summary of Results. The global population reached nearly 8.2 billion by mid-2024 and is expected to grow by another two billion over the next 60 years, peaking at around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s. It will then fall to around 10.2 billion, which is 700 million lower than expected a decade ago. That’s just one of the key findings revealed in Thursday’s World Population Prospects 2024 report published by the UN Thursday. However, changes in global population are uneven and the demographic landscape is evolving, with rapid population growth in some places and rapid ageing in others, making reliable population data “more important than ever”, said the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA), heralding the report which is published to coincide with World Population Day. The report “must be used to reach and respond to the needs of those who have been left behind,” the agency added. ‘Everyone counts’ Marking the international day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said it was key to accurately count everyone “because everyone counts.” “Our rich human tapestry is only as strong as its weakest thread. When data and other systems work for those on the margins, they work for everyone. This is how we accelerate progress for all.” To study this population data more closely, the 28th edition of World Population Prospects (WPP) published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) since 1951, provides the latest demographic data for 237 countries from 1950 to 2024 and projections up to the year 2100. The WPP is crucial to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals, with about a quarter of the indicators relying on its data. Learn More: https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/07/1151971

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Colombia and Head of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMIC) Carlos Ruiz Massieu told the Council that after the signing of Peace Agreement in Colombia in 2016, “there was a brief absence of violence in the territories,” but added that “in the absence of a determined effort by the State to fill the gaps that remained after the abandonment of arms by the former FARC, the gradual expansion of other armed groups began.” As a result, Ruiz Massieu said, “there are complex conflict dynamics in several areas that affect the daily lives of communities, especially indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities.” The Special Representative told the Council that “insecurity is clearly the main obstacle to reintegration and the success of the Peace Agreement.” He said 421 signatories have been killed since it was signed. The UN envoy recalled the courage demonstrated by thousands of former fighters who laid down their arms, as well as the Government’s important work in supporting ex-combatants and their families.

Russian Deputy Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy said that the just adopted resolution on safety and security of nuclear facilities of Ukraine “will make absolutely no effect on the ground.” Today (11 Jul), the General Assembly adopted the draft resolution A/78/L.90 introduced by Ukraine on safety and security of nuclear facilities in the country, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, by 99 votes in favour, 9 against and 60 abstentions. After the vote, Polyanskiy addressed the press and said that the resolution ”may only unfortunately embolden the parties of war in Europe, in the States and in Ukraine of course. And they will try to pretend that this kind of support of international community for their efforts to keep Zelenskyy’s regime.” He also said, “I don’t think that anybody who is sane is thinking that Russia is targeting our own nuclear plant given the fact that are 4 others power plants in other regions of Ukraine which are not under our control. It would be very much logical for us to target those ones if we wanted to inflict damage in nuclear safety in Ukraine.” Answering a question, he said, “Kherson, the Zaporizhzhia, regions Donetsk Lugansk are part of Russian federation according to Constitution. There is no way we are going to give them back, of course. And it’s not because we are stubborn but because of the will of people who are living in these areas. So, who know what will be the third attempt, what will remain of Ukraine at this moment, is very hard to predict. So, I would not take such a chance if I were in Ukrainian shoes.”

Cyprus, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria & other topics - Daily Press Briefing Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: -International Days -Secretary-General/Education -Security Council -Cyprus -Occupied Palestinian Territory -Syria -Sudan -South Sudan -Democratic Republic of the Congo -Hurricane Beryl -Operational support -Guests tomorrow/Briefings INTERNATIONAL DAYS Today is the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. At a memorial event held this morning in the General Assembly Hall, the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, delivered a message on behalf of the Secretary-General. He underscored that the genocide in Srebrenica stands as a harrowing testament to the devastating consequences of inaction in the face of hatred. Today is also World Population Day. In his message, the Secretary-General says that more women than ever have access to modern contraception, but progress has been unequal and unsteady. He adds that around 800 women die needlessly every day in pregnancy and childbirth – the vast majority in developing countries. SECRETARY-GENERAL/EDUCATION The Secretary-General spoke this morning at the Special Event on Transforming Education, noting that almost two years have passed since the Transforming Education Summit was held right here in New York. Since then, he said, the global crisis in education that leaders came together to address at the Summit has shown little sign of abating. Without a dramatic shift in tackling that crisis, the Secretary-General warned, we cannot — and will not — shape a more peaceful, sustainable and just world. He said that some 84 million children are likely to remain out of school by 2030, adding that it is truly shocking and that some 70 per cent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are unable to read a basic text by age 10. SECURITY COUNCIL This morning, the Security Council held consultations on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, briefed Council members. And this afternoon, at 3:00 p.m., the Council will hold an open briefing, followed by consultations, on Colombia. Carlos Ruiz Massieu, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia is expected to brief Council members. CYPRUS And also on Cyprus, I have been asked about the Secretary-General’s meeting with his Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Angela Holguín Cuéllar. In answer to those questions, I can say that the Secretary-General received yesterday the report of Ms. Holguin on her efforts to find common ground on the way forward in Cyprus. The Secretary-General is now considering the recommendations in her report in order to propose next steps to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders. OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the UN and its partners continue to respond wherever and whenever possible, despite ongoing hostilities, access restrictions, impassable roads, fuel shortages, and a lack of public order and safety, all of which are obviously severely hampering all of our humanitarian operations. The World Food Programme (WFP) says it has assisted about a quarter of a million people in Gaza so far this month. During June, the agency provided food rations for over a million people in Gaza. However, limited food stocks in central and southern Gaza forced WFP to reduce rations last month, with some areas only receiving wheat flour. So far this month, WFP has also worked with dozens of community kitchens in Gaza to provide about 1.8 million hot meals to people in central and southern Gaza, as well as Gaza City. But the agency warns that the supplies needed for this assistance will be depleted in just days unless additional stocks are received. Meanwhile, the UN, along its humanitarian partners, are providing critical support to displaced people crossing from northern to southern Gaza, following Israel’s latest instructions for people to leave Gaza city. This includes water, hot meals, food parcels, and health and nutrition support. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that more evacuation orders issued by Israel are further threatening the health of people who have already suffered so much. WHO’s Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said today that the Al-Ahli and Patient Friendly hospitals in northern Gaza are the latest unable to function due to fighting. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 patients still need to be evacuated out of the Gaza Strip, because they cannot receive required treatment inside Gaza.
