Remarks by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29. --------------------------------- Addressing the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “Unless emissions plummet and adaptation soars, every economy will face far greater fury.” The two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29 launched today bringing together some 100 national leaders. Over the next two days, COP29 provides a platform for world leaders to raise ambition and translate climate pledges into concrete, real-economy outcomes. At the opening of the Summit, Guterres said, “This is a story of avoidable injustice. The rich cause the problem, the poor pay the highest price. Oxfam finds the richest billionaires emit more carbon in an hour and a half than the average person does in a lifetime. Unless emissions plummet and adaptation soars, every economy will face far greater fury.” He continued, “Last year – for the first time – the amount invested in grids and renewables overtook the amount spent on fossil fuels. Almost everywhere, solar and wind are the cheapest source of new electricity. Doubling down on fossil fuels is absurd. The clean energy revolution is here. No group, no business, and no government can stop it.” He stressed, “But all countries must do their part. But the G20 must lead. They are the largest emitters, with the greatest capacities and responsibilities.” He concluded, “Climate finance is not charity, it’s an investment. Climate action is not optional, it’s imperative. Both are indispensable: to a liveable world for all humanity. And a prosperous future for every nation on Earth. The clock is ticking, and I count on you.”

Highlights: - Climate - UNIFIL - Lebanon/Humanitarian - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Syria - Ukraine - Haiti - Haiti Children - Sudan - Chad Climate  The Secretary-General has landed a few hours ago in Baku, in Azerbaijan. He is attending the 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, better known as COP29. Today, he met with the President of Azerbaijan, President Aliyev.  He expressed his full cooperation and support for the presidency to have a successful COP with an ambitious result. He also met with COP President Mukhtar Babayev. Tomorrow, as he does every year, he will address the leaders during the opening ceremony where he will remind them that, unless emissions plummet and adaptation soars, every economy will face the impacts of climate change.  He will urge leaders to focus to increase their efforts to slash fossil fuel production and consumption, agree with the rules for a fair and effective carbon market and to take fundamental step-changes on climate finance across the board, among other measures. In particular, Mr. Guterres will have a message for G20 countries, asking them to lead, as they have the tools and the resources needed by all countries for climate action. Tomorrow, he will speak at the High-Level Dialogue on Loss and Damage, and Africa’s “Green Momentum” event. And he will also meet with various leaders who are attending the COP29.  UNIFIL  UNIFIL is continuing to follow with concern the exchanges of fire between Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah. The increasing impact on civilians is of grave concern and we condemn the ongoing loss of lives that we have seen.  Parties to the conflict must adhere to international law and protect civilians as well as civilian infrastructure.  Full Highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/ossg/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=11%20November%202024

Dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire in Amsterdam.   No injuries were reported in the fire on Monday night, which police quickly extinguished.   Video footage shows rioters damaging property and setting off firecrackers in a city square.   In some videos, rioters could be heard using antisemitic slurs.   Riot officers cleared the square, where the tram had been set on fire.   Police have not confirmed who started the unrest or if it’s linked to last week’s violence.   The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the city after clashes between pro-Palestine groups and fans of an Israeli soccer club.   Last week’s incident left five people hospitalised and led to dozens of arrests after the Maccabi Tel Aviv-Ajax match.   Dutch police announced five additional arrests on Monday related to the earlier violence. Russian marines and paratroopers, backed by North Korean reinforcements, are already trying to overwhelm Ukrainian positions.  Zelensky claimed this operation was limiting Moscow’s ability to strike inside Ukraine. But a New York Times report suggested Moscow reinforced Kursk without withdrawing troops from the eastern frontline where Russia is slowly advancing towards the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk.  The report also stated that North Korean troops were being deployed to Kursk ahead of a Russian counter-offensive.
