Play Video: Speaker Series N°10 – Translating Genomic Data into Public Health Actions

Pathogen genomic surveillance is a powerful tool for detecting emerging threats, tracking disease transmission and pathogen evolution, and guiding public health responses. Unlocking the full potential of pathogen genomic surveillance requires effectively integrating insights derived from genomic data into public health actions. This demands robust diagnostic systems, sustained national capacities, cross-sector and cross-border collaboration, and resilient data architectures to ensure scalability and impact at the country level. This session will explore key enablers for strengthening genomic surveillance, emphasizing the role of genomic data and diagnostics as a foundation for effective public health actions. It will showcase innovative tools and collaborations through initiatives like the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN). Country perspectives will also be featured, sharing good practices and lessons learned to enhance accessibility, build capacity, and ultimately support evidence-based decision-making for emergency preparedness and response. The Speaker Series is co-hosted by the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence and the Charité Center for Global Health. More info: https://pandemichub.who.int/speaker-series

Pediatric epileptologist Babitha Haridas discusses the results of a retrospective single-center case series of nine children with Rett syndrome and epilepsy who were treated with the classic ketogenic diet. The case series, published in the Journal of Child Neurology, found that the ketogenic diet is a safe and effective form of anti-seizure therapy in children with Rett syndrome: 67% of the patients had a greater than or equal to 50% reduction in seizures. Based on their results, Haridas and her colleagues strongly encourage consideration of the ketogenic diet earlier in the treatment algorithm for refractory epilepsy, especially in those with gastrostomy tubes. #ketogenicdiet #johnshopkins #rettsyndrome

The retrospective study looked at 135 patients with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or indeterminate colitis who were treated with upadacitinib between January 2020 and September 2024. Their findings suggest that reinduction of upadacitinib at a higher dose, combination therapy or switching to another agent are all viable strategies, and that personalized treatment approaches are essential to IBD management.
