Pediatric epileptologist Babitha Haridas discusses the results of a retrospective single-center case series of nine children with Rett syndrome and epilepsy who were treated with the classic ketogenic diet. The case series, published in the Journal of Child Neurology, found that the ketogenic diet is a safe and effective form of anti-seizure therapy in children with Rett syndrome: 67% of the patients had a greater than or equal to 50% reduction in seizures. Postdoctoral research fellow Lynn Kobeissi discusses research undertaken with colleagues in the Johns Hopkins Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology aimed at addressing how best to manage patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who don’t respond to upadacitinib. The retrospective study looked at 135 patients with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or indeterminate colitis who were treated with upadacitinib between January 2020 and September 2024. Their findings suggest that reinduction of upadacitinib at a higher dose, combination therapy or switching to another agent are all viable strategies, and that personalized treatment approaches are essential to IBD management.
