Earlier today, in Berlin, he met with Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany. They discussed topics that included the situation in the Middle East and the partnership between the UN and Germany.  Yesterday, he met the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and he told reporters later that they had discussed, among other topics, the situations in Gaza and Ukraine. While in Iraq, Mr. Guterres will attend the Arab League Summit. He will address the Summit on Saturday. He is also scheduled to hold a number of meetings with leaders and officials attending the summit, including leaders of the host country. He is also going to meet with our UN team in Iraq. LIBYA The Secretary-General takes note of the truce reached in Tripoli yesterday and calls on all parties to take urgent steps to sustain and build upon it through dialogue. The rapid nature of the escalation, which drew armed groups from outside the city and subjected heavily populated neighborhoods to heavy artillery fire, was alarming. The Secretary-General is deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of at least eight civilians in the recent clashes. The Secretary-General reminds all parties of their obligation to protect civilians and calls on them to engage in serious dialogue in good faith to address the root causes of the conflict. The United Nations stands ready to provide its good offices to facilitate agreement on a path towards lasting peace and stability in Libya. Press Conference by Andrew Saberton, Deputy Executive Director for Management, UNFPA, on his recent trip to Afghanistan. ------------------------------ A dual humanitarian crisis is looming in Afghanistan as tens of thousands of Afghans are being forced to return from neighbouring countries. In April 2025, more than 251,000 Afghans returned from Iran and Pakistan, including over 96,000 who were deported. At the same time, UNFPA’s largest donor, the US Government, has abruptly ended all funding to UNFPA in the country, totalling over $100 million. People forced to return to Afghanistan may encounter serious risks. This is especially true for Afghan women and girls, who face increasing restrictions in terms of access to employment, education and freedom of movement in Afghanistan. These concerns are compounded by acute humanitarian needs inside Afghanistan, rising unemployment rates, as well as natural disasters and extreme weather incidents. The funding UNFPA has lost was mostly for Family Health Houses, mobile health teams and psychosocial support services in rural communities. As a result, 6.3 million people, mostly women and girls, will lose access to life-saving care and UNFPA will be forced to reduce the number of facilities it supports by over a half over the next year. From 4 - 9 May 2025, UNFPA Deputy Executive Director (Management) Mr. Andrew Saberton visited Afghanistan to see the difference UNFPA is making and better understand the impact of the funding cuts. He visited UNFPA-supported services in the capital Kabul, Bamyan province, and the Torkham border with Pakistan and saw the devastating impacts the massive cuts to UNFPA will have in one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises.

Since a temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas broke down in mid-March, intense fighting has resumed in the Gaza Strip. Both the IDF, and the military wing of Hamas, have posted a steady stream of videos showing their fighters in combat. While these clips are hard to independently verify, they do give us a unique perspective of the conflict on the ground. Here, we’ve gathered some of that combat footage, from the past two months. More than 19 months after Israel launched its ground campaign in Gaza, there are parts of the Strip it hasn’t brought under control. Fighting near the southern city of Rafah has been particularly fierce, with the al Qassam Brigades - Hamas’ military arm - launching a series of videos on what it calls ‘the gates of hell’ operation. These highly-edited clips show two separate ambushes on Israeli troops east of the city - which it claims killed and wounded several IDF soldiers. Despite Israel claiming to have almost broken the militant group’s power, Hamas fighters are now experienced in urban warfare, using this ruined landscape to their advantage. These videos, recorded by Israeli soldiers, show fighting at incredibly close range inside buildings. And in April, Hamas posted this video of another ambitious ambush on an Israeli vehicle convoy. For the most part, however, the videos show smaller engagements involving small numbers on each side. Individual militants using rocket propelled grenades against Israeli armoured vehicles and bulldozers remains common. As do attacks by snipers targeting isolated patrols… …while long range rocket attacks into Israel have remained a feature since the start of the conflict. While they must remain on guard at all times, most IDF patrols do not encounter Hamas insurgents… but they do claim to still regularly find tunnels used by them. But things can be dangerous in a warzone, even without the presence of the enemy. This video filmed by an Israeli soldier, purportedly shows debris from a detonation, almost taking them out. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with Israel blocking food and aid from entering the strip. Estimates place the number of people killed since the start of the war, between 50 and 60,000.
