Today, in Baghdad, the Secretary-General met with the President of Iraq, Abdul Latif Rasheed. They discussed regional issues. The Secretary-General thanked the Iraqi President for the hospitality shown during the summit and the continued and enhanced UN-Iraqi cooperation.
The Secretary-General also met today with the African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf. Mr. Guterres also met with the Sudanese delegation that is attending the summit, and he underscored the UN’s interest in a dialogue that can lead to a solution in the country, as well as the importance of protecting civilians.
The Secretary-General also held discussions today with the Foreign Minister of Egypt, Badr Abdel Aty. They discussed the situation in Gaza and Sudan, among other topics.
Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will attend the Arab League Summit. He is expected to address the situation in Gaza, to talk about Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and others.
UKRAINE/RUSSIA TALKS IN ISTANBUL
Regarding questions about the talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations that took place today in Istanbul, the Associate Spokesperson said that the UN welcomes today's talks - the first such direct negotiations in three years, including discussions on a potential ceasefire and large-scale exchange of Prisoners of War. The UN notes the important role of Turkiye and the United States in facilitating these discussions. The UN hopes this process will lead to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, which would serve as a critical step towards creating the conditions for a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in Ukraine, in line with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions. The UN stands ready to support all meaningful efforts to that end.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL/ANGOLA
Also, as we mentioned, the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, is in Angola to chair the annual retreat of UN Resident Coordinators from Africa. The retreat started today and will continue until Sunday. Discussions there will focus on accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, advancing the Pact for the Future, and mobilizing investments for key transitions across the continent.
Earlier today, the Deputy Secretary-General visited the Lobito Corridor, a key infrastructure and trade initiative linking Angola with neighboring countries. She highlighted its potential to diversify the economy, boost trade, and create jobs.
Ms. Mohammed also visited the Nutrition Unit and Cholera Treatment Centre at Benguela General Hospital, where UN agencies such as the UNICEF and the World Health Organization are supporting efforts to strengthen the nutritional response and also contain a cholera outbreak.
Yesterday, the Deputy Secretary-General met with the President of Angola, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, as well as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Téte António. As Angola marks 50 years of independence and assumes the presidency of the African Union, discussions focused on the country’s leadership in advancing peace and driving sustainable development.
Ms. Mohammed reaffirmed our support for Angola’s efforts to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda. She is expected to return to New York on Monday, 19 May.

BBC News Video: Trump warns “people in Gaza are starving” as international condemnation of Israel grows | BBC News
President Trump said for the first time today that "a lot of people in Gaza are starving" and vowed that the US would take care of the situation. He was speaking after finishing a tour of the Middle East, during which he chose not to visit Israel.
Israeli air strikes have killed nearly 100 people in northern Gaza in a single day, according to Hamas-run civil defence teams. It comes after more than 120 Palestinians were killed yesterday in the south of the territory.
The UN is ’warning that half a million people face famine and its human rights chief says that Israel's actions are tantamount to ethnic cleansing.
Palestinians in Beit Lahia and Jabalia described a large-scale assault on the ground and from the air and sea in the early hours of the morning. The Israeli military said its troops were dismantling what it called terrorist infrastructure.
It's not clear whether the operation marks the start of the major new offensive promised by Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel doesn't allow independent access to Gaza for international journalists, including the BBC.

It’s Donald Trump’s first major trip in his second term as president and he’s chosen to visit the Gulf in a four-day whirlwind tour.
He began in Saudi Arabia for a friendly meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Among other issues he agreed to lift sanctions on Syria and struck a number of trade deals, marking a big shift in relations between the two nations since Joe Biden’s presidency. But the trip threatens to be overshadowed by the fallout from Qatar’s gift of a free luxury jumbo jet.
The president has defended the gift and said he would be a “stupid person” to turn it down, which has prompted criticism from his supporters including the far-right influencer Laura Loomer.

BBC News Video: White South African defends refugee status in US | BBC News
Afrikaner Charl Kleinhaus is among the group of nearly 60 white South Africans who have moved to the US under President Donald Trump’s controversial policy to grant refugee status to Afrikaners.
The 46-year-old left his family farm in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, for a new life in the US - saying he quit his homeland after receiving death threats in WhatsApp messages.
The status of white South African farmers has long been a rallying cry on the right and far-right of American politics, who claim there has been a "genocide" of white farmers in the country.
None of South Africa's political parties - including those that represent Afrikaners and the white community in general - have claimed that there is a genocide in South Africa.

Since a temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas broke down in mid-March, intense fighting has resumed in the Gaza Strip.
Both the IDF, and the military wing of Hamas, have posted a steady stream of videos showing their fighters in combat.
While these clips are hard to independently verify, they do give us a unique perspective of the conflict on the ground.
Here, we’ve gathered some of that combat footage, from the past two months.
More than 19 months after Israel launched its ground campaign in Gaza, there are parts of the Strip it hasn’t brought under control.
Fighting near the southern city of Rafah has been particularly fierce, with the al Qassam Brigades - Hamas’ military arm - launching a series of videos on what it calls ‘the gates of hell’ operation.
These highly-edited clips show two separate ambushes on Israeli troops east of the city - which it claims killed and wounded several IDF soldiers.
Despite Israel claiming to have almost broken the militant group’s power, Hamas fighters are now experienced in urban warfare, using this ruined landscape to their advantage.
These videos, recorded by Israeli soldiers, show fighting at incredibly close range inside buildings.
And in April, Hamas posted this video of another ambitious ambush on an Israeli vehicle convoy.
For the most part, however, the videos show smaller engagements involving small numbers on each side.
Individual militants using rocket propelled grenades against Israeli armoured vehicles and bulldozers remains common.
As do attacks by snipers targeting isolated patrols…
…while long range rocket attacks into Israel have remained a feature since the start of the conflict.
While they must remain on guard at all times, most IDF patrols do not encounter Hamas insurgents… but they do claim to still regularly find tunnels used by them.
But things can be dangerous in a warzone, even without the presence of the enemy. This video filmed by an Israeli soldier, purportedly shows debris from a detonation, almost taking them out.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with Israel blocking food and aid from entering the strip. Estimates place the number of people killed since the start of the war, between 50 and 60,000.

International Video: Romania elections: Is pro-Russian candidate on brink of victory?
On Sunday, Ukraine's neighbour Romania heads to the polls for the final vote in its presidential race after December's election was cancelled over alleged Russian interference.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The contenders are Nicosur Dan, the centrist mayor of Bucharest, and George Simion, a former football hooligan and Trump fan who has swept into the race after the previous front-runner, the pro-Russian Calin Georgescu was banned from standing.
The two men offer wildly differing views of the future of Romania - a closer friendship with Moscow, or alignment with the EU.

International Video: RFK Jr's new British medical adviser on vaccines and Big Pharma | Aseem Malhotra
Aseem Malhotra is a deeply controversial British doctor who has just been appointed as Chief Medical Adviser of the Make America Healthy Again campaign group co-founded by Donald Trump's health secretary Robert F Kennedy Junior.
[Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe]
It makes him one of the US Health Secretary's most influential medical advisers - and that's alarming doctors and academics around the world, because Aseem Malhotra, like RFK JR, goes against mainstream, established opinion on many topics.
Most controversially he opposes the MRNA covid vaccines, claiming they cause more harm than good, and wants to end their use in America, even though people are still dying with Covid around the world.
In the UK hundreds of people are dying with covid every month yet Dr Malhotra claims the virus is no longer deadly. He also supports RFK Junior's decision to reinvestigate discredited claims of a link between vaccines and autism, amid alarming levels of vaccine scepticism in America, and outbreaks of deadly measles.
For the latest episode of The Fourcast Krishnan Guru-Murthy talks to Dr Malhotra, but we also examine his claims and scrutinise them by hearing from Stephen Griffin, Professor of Virology at Leeds University - who is a leading scientist in Britain and believes claims being made by Dr Malhotra and RFK Junior are wrong.
