United Nations Video: World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report - Press Conference | United Nations
“It's been a nervous time for the global economy,” a Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Senior official said.
At the launch the World Economic Situation and Prospects mid-year report today (16 May), Shantanu Mukherjee, Director, Economic Analysis and Policy Division of UN DESA said, “It's been a nervous time for the global economy. In January this year, we were expecting two years of stable growth, and since then, prospects have diminished, accompanied by significant volatility across various dimensions. So now we are forecasting global economic growth at 2.4 percent for 2025 and 2.5 percent for 2026. This is the downward revision of point four percentage points each year back from what we were expecting in January.”
He also said, “This is not a recession, but the slowing down is affecting most countries and regions. Among the most severely hit are the least developed countries whose growth prospects for 2025 have fallen from 4.6 to 4.1 which is a drop by a full half percentage point in just a few months. Now, that translates into a loss of billions in economic output for the most disadvantage of countries.”
He continued, “With this most recent shock, their five-year cumulative growth since 2021 is expected to be over 1/4 smaller than it would have been had they just grown at the rate they were averaging before the pandemic. Now, these are growth prospects are compounding the challenges they already face, such as fall in ODA, limited fiscal space and high levels of debt. And many developing countries are also still grappling with high levels of inflation, even though this is gradually moderating in some countries.”
He added, “At this point, the average effective tariff rates for the US around 14 percent which is about six times higher than they were at the start of the year. And trade policy uncertainty is a factor in itself. It remains elevated, having surged to its highest value in the last 10 years, multiple times higher than the previous week.”
He highlighted, “With merchandise trade representing just over a fifth the world output, and US and China together accounting for about a quarter of total imports., there's no surprise that these changes reverberated across the world, and going beyond just tariffs, volatility and some rather unexpected co movements have happened in a range of economic and financial indicators.”
He said, “The uncertainty makes it even more likely that investment growth across the world, which was already slowing from 3.5 percent in 23 to 2.8 percent in 24 will continue to fall. And just to relate it to something we're all familiar with for small and medium enterprises, for example, difficulty in accessing capital when most needed can be fatal, with long term impacts for those whose livelihoods depend on them. Often, these are women.”
He reported, “Across the world, fiscal deficits are now increasing for a variety of reasons. Developed countries and other major economies can finance these deficits quite affordably, but for many developing countries, the fiscal situation is becoming increasingly challenging.”
He also said, “But our forecast from the beginning of the year indicated that overall, the global economy was reasonably healthy, and we recognize also that when assessed in comparison to other recent shocks, such as the global financial crisis, we have a downgrade, but it's not as extreme. In the forecast that we will present in greater detail today, we are expecting that bilateral negotiations will lead to lower tariff levels, although these will not return to pre-February levels. However, despite this, an early and complete resolution of uncertainties would help individuals and businesses move forward with economic decision making with positive results in 25 and even bigger impacts in 2026.”

Ten prisoners, several of them facing murder charges, have escaped from a New Orleans jail after escaping through a toilet wall.
The inmates are thought to have fled around midnight, and were discovered missing during a headcount at 08:30 local time (13:30 GMT) at the Orleans Parish Jail on Friday morning. Three of the 10 have been apprehended as of Friday evening.
"There's no way for anyone to get out of this facility without help," Sheriff Susan Huston said during a news conference.
The sheriff's office posted photos showing how the inmates escaped, which included taunting messages apparently left by the escapees. "To Easy LoL," one message read.
Sheriff Hutson said the inmates escaped after ripping a toilet from the wall and breaking metal bars around a hole in the wall that was used for piping.

Since a temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas broke down in mid-March, intense fighting has resumed in the Gaza Strip.
Both the IDF, and the military wing of Hamas, have posted a steady stream of videos showing their fighters in combat.
While these clips are hard to independently verify, they do give us a unique perspective of the conflict on the ground.
Here, we’ve gathered some of that combat footage, from the past two months.
More than 19 months after Israel launched its ground campaign in Gaza, there are parts of the Strip it hasn’t brought under control.
Fighting near the southern city of Rafah has been particularly fierce, with the al Qassam Brigades - Hamas’ military arm - launching a series of videos on what it calls ‘the gates of hell’ operation.
These highly-edited clips show two separate ambushes on Israeli troops east of the city - which it claims killed and wounded several IDF soldiers.
Despite Israel claiming to have almost broken the militant group’s power, Hamas fighters are now experienced in urban warfare, using this ruined landscape to their advantage.
These videos, recorded by Israeli soldiers, show fighting at incredibly close range inside buildings.
And in April, Hamas posted this video of another ambitious ambush on an Israeli vehicle convoy.
For the most part, however, the videos show smaller engagements involving small numbers on each side.
Individual militants using rocket propelled grenades against Israeli armoured vehicles and bulldozers remains common.
As do attacks by snipers targeting isolated patrols…
…while long range rocket attacks into Israel have remained a feature since the start of the conflict.
While they must remain on guard at all times, most IDF patrols do not encounter Hamas insurgents… but they do claim to still regularly find tunnels used by them.
But things can be dangerous in a warzone, even without the presence of the enemy. This video filmed by an Israeli soldier, purportedly shows debris from a detonation, almost taking them out.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with Israel blocking food and aid from entering the strip. Estimates place the number of people killed since the start of the war, between 50 and 60,000.

Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel have resumed in Doha 'without preconditions' according to a Hamas official - as Israel says it's in the early stages of a military operation to expand its control over parts of Gaza.
In the last 24 hours, Israeli air strikes killed at least 140 people, making this one of the deadliest phases of bombardment since the previous ceasefire collapsed in March.
According to the Hamas-led health authorities, the total death toll since October 2023 is now over 53,000 people.
Warning, there are distressing images in this report.

International Video: RFK Jr's new British medical adviser on vaccines and Big Pharma | Aseem Malhotra
Aseem Malhotra is a deeply controversial British doctor who has just been appointed as Chief Medical Adviser of the Make America Healthy Again campaign group co-founded by Donald Trump's health secretary Robert F Kennedy Junior.
[Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe]
It makes him one of the US Health Secretary's most influential medical advisers - and that's alarming doctors and academics around the world, because Aseem Malhotra, like RFK JR, goes against mainstream, established opinion on many topics.
Most controversially he opposes the MRNA covid vaccines, claiming they cause more harm than good, and wants to end their use in America, even though people are still dying with Covid around the world.
In the UK hundreds of people are dying with covid every month yet Dr Malhotra claims the virus is no longer deadly. He also supports RFK Junior's decision to reinvestigate discredited claims of a link between vaccines and autism, amid alarming levels of vaccine scepticism in America, and outbreaks of deadly measles.
For the latest episode of The Fourcast Krishnan Guru-Murthy talks to Dr Malhotra, but we also examine his claims and scrutinise them by hearing from Stephen Griffin, Professor of Virology at Leeds University - who is a leading scientist in Britain and believes claims being made by Dr Malhotra and RFK Junior are wrong.
