Briefing by Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, on the situation in Yemen during the 9935th meeting of the Security Council.
One year since the detention of dozens United Nations, national and international NGOs, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions’ personnel in Yemen, Special Envoy Hans Grundberg today (12 Jun) called “in the strongest terms for their immediate and unconditional release."
Addressing the Security Council via video teleconference, Grundberg noted that, “some colleagues have been detained since 2021, and there were additional detentions in 2025.”
He said, “their continued imprisonment is shameful.”
The Special Envoy said, “the multiple frontlines across Yemen remain fragile and risk descending into more active fighting,” and expressed particular concern for Marib, “with reports of troop movement and occasional flareups, in addition to sporadic activity on other front lines in Al-Dhalea, Hudaydah, Lahj and Ta’iz Governorates.”
He stressed “the shared responsibility for all actors to step away from confrontation and instead resume discussions on a ceasefire.”
Following the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Ansar Allah, Grundberg said, “we need to build on the recent cessation of hostilities in the Red Sea and provide durable guarantees to the region and the wider international community and ensure the safety of all those using this critical waterway.”
He said, “this effort goes hand-in-hand with our ongoing work towards the roadmap that will help Yemen overcome its current divisions and lead to a comprehensive ceasefire, critical economic measures and an inclusive political process.”

British chef Si King visits herder families in Mongolia with IFAD’s Recipes for Change. In a land of extreme temperatures, he meets those adapting tradition to survive climate shocks—from deadly winters to drying pastures. With support from IFAD, herders are finding new ways to protect their animals, their culture, and their future.
With nearly a third of the population living as nomadic herders, Mongolia’s identity is deeply tied to its land and livestock. But extreme winters, hotter summers and shrinking pastures are making traditional herding more difficult with every passing year.
IFAD Recipes for Change chef Si King recently travelled to Khentii Province to visit Badma and Bold, herders who are adapting to the changing climate with support from the IFAD-funded Project for Market and Pasture Management Development. Their cooperative shares key tasks like fodder production, pasture rotation and preparations for winter – all vital to surviving the bitter Mongolian cold.
IFAD is the world’s fund for transforming agriculture, rural economies and food systems. Founded in response to a global food crisis, IFAD is a specialized United Nations agency and an International Financial Institution that tackles hunger and poverty in rural communities.

OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
Turning to the Gaza Strip, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns that a complete collapse of internet and data services is paralyzing aid operations across the Gaza Strip. Our partners working on telecommunications say this is due to damage to the last fibre cable route serving central and southern Gaza, likely caused during heavy military activity.
They warn that this is not a routine outage, but a total failure of Gaza’s digital infrastructure. Lifelines to emergency services, humanitarian coordination, and critical information for civilians have all been cut. There is a full internet blackout, and mobile networks are barely functioning.
In a context already limited by physical access restrictions and widespread damage, emergency services are cut off, and civilians cannot access life-saving support.
You will have seen UNRWA’s post earlier today saying they’ve lost contact with colleagues in Gaza. That’s true for most agencies – we’re largely cut off from our teams on the ground.
Meanwhile, OCHA warns that the fuel blockade – imposed by Israeli authorities for over 100 days now – has reached a critical point. Fuel is running out fast, and essential services that keep people alive are now dangerously close to shutting down.
Yesterday, we mentioned health, water and sanitation facilities. Just to give you a clearer picture: Our colleagues working on health now warn that nearly 80 per cent of health facilities providing life-saving services may very soon run out of fuel. That’s 67 out of 85 such facilities – including 17 hospitals, seven field hospitals, and 43 primary healthcare centres. They warn that lives are on the line, particularly newborns who depend on incubators and ventilators, and other patients in critical care units.
Hemodialysis services are also expected to cease. Ambulance services and patient referrals are expected to come to a halt, effectively eliminating the so-called "golden hour" critical for trauma care – that’s the crucial first hour after trauma injury, when medical treatment is most likely to save a person's life.
Other critical services that could be affected by fuel depletion are water wells and desalination systems.
You will recall that more than a dozen attempts to retrieve such fuel from northern Gaza were denied by Israeli authorities before 260,000 litres ended up being looted. Today, an attempt to retrieve fuel was initially approved, after weeks of repeated access denials, but it could not be accomplished. The UN Office for Project Services, UNOPS, said that shelling forced the team to turn back, with one fuel truck driver sustaining injury.
OCHA calls on the Israeli authorities to urgently restore the entry of fuel into Gaza and facilitate access to reserves that are already inside, in hard-to-reach areas.
OCHA warns that civilians also continue to be displaced in Gaza. Today, Israeli authorities issued displacement orders for six neighbourhoods across three governorates: Gaza North, Gaza and Khan Younis. Together, these orders encompass over three square kilometres, which were already covered by previous displacement orders. OCHA reminds us that, just like fuel, for over 100 days, the Israeli authorities have not allowed any tents or other shelter materials into the Gaza Strip.

ODN Video: Air India Crash: Terrifying Footage of Boeing Plane Disaster
Footage posted on social media captures the horrifying moment a passenger jet crashed in western India.
There’s chaos on the ground as emergency services descend on the crash site, with burning wreckage sending a tower of black smoke into the air.
Here’s what we know so far…
The Air India flight, which departed from Ahmedabad’s main airport at 1338, crashed around five minutes later in the residential neighbourhood of Meghani Nagar. It was en route to London Gatwick.
We understand that weather conditions were clear and stable. But shortly after take off, the vastly experienced pilot sent out a mayday call. Flight tracking data showed the plane was at 625 feet when the last signal was received.
The plane was a state of the art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and this is the first crash involving this type of aircraft.
This is a fast moving story, but we know that 242 people were aboard the plane, including 169 Indians, and 53 British nationals.
The plane reportedly crashed into a doctors' hostel, an accommodation for local medical professionals. There’s devastation on the ground.
Emergency services were at the crash site within minutes, and dozens of bodies have already been recovered.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to say "The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words.”
Meanwhile, the UK Prime Minister has described scenes on the ground as devastating.
The UK is working with Indian authorities to provide information and support to those affected.
There’s still plenty of information to piece together about this tragedy, and we’re unlikely to know the full extent of it for some time.
An investigation will quickly attempt to establish the cause of the crash, with Boeing likely to have tough questions to answer. It’s another blow for the company, with Boeing aircraft involved in a number of fatal collisions in recent years.
We’ll bring you more updates on this story in the coming days.

International Video: Is India quietly tightening its grip on Kashmir? | Map Room
India’s prime minister has just inaugurated the Chenab rail bridge, connecting Kashmir to India’s vast rail network. But critics are warning it’s the latest project designed to control the disputed territory.
[Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe]
India has been approving an enormous amount of building projects in the disputed territory of Kashmir in recent years.
Since revoking laws that granted Kashmir autonomy, Narendra Modi's government has had new powers to build on and populate the land.
Channel 4 News explores the impact of these projects and the extent of a growing military presence using data gathered by Forensic Architecture and Forensis, to investigate claims by some Kashmiris that Modi’s government is trying to tighten its grip on the region by bringing more Hindus into India’s only Muslim-majority region.
India says this is all part of a plan to improve the lives of Kashmiri people.
