Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani told reporters, “Just hours ago, Israeli regime deliberately targeted the office of Iran's News Agency during a live broadcast. This appalling attack constituted a blatant war crime and a direct assault on press freedom. The Israeli regime has once again demonstrated that it is the foremost enemy of truth.”
Ambassador Iravani spoke to reporter today (16 Jun) in New York. He said, “Israel has committed a blatant act of aggression against the sovereign and territorial integrity of Iran,” adding that “its relentless campaign of atrocities against our people continues unabated.”
The Iranian Ambassador stressed, “This is a serious violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law. These attacks crossed all red lines.”
“Most alarmingly, Israel deliberately targeted a peaceful nuclear facility operating under full IAEA safety guards,” Ambassador Iravani said, highlighting that “this is a dangerous and illegal act.”
“It poses a serious risk of releasing radioactive material. if Iran had not immediately contained the situation, the consequences could have been catastrophic. Israeli claim of surgical strike is false and misleading,” he added.
Speaking about the attack on the Iran's News Agency, Ambassador Iravani said that Israel “holds a disgraceful record of being the world's leading perpetrator of violence against journalists and media professionals.”
He continued, “In response to this barbaric attack and aggression, Iran exercise its inherent right to self-defense in line with article 51 of Charter. Our response was defensive, targeted and proportionate. It is solely aimed at deterring and preventing the recurrence of such crimes. Iran will resolutely defend its security and territorial integrity.”
“Iran does not seek war or escalation, but we will not hesitate to defend our people, our territory and our sovereignty. Unlike the Israeli regime, Iran respects the international humanitarian law. We did not target civilians," the Iranian Ambassador said.
Ambassador Iravani also said, “The US forces supported Israeli aggression. Without the US weapons, intelligence and political backing, this attack could not have happened.”
“The United States will share responsibility for this unlawful act,” he stressed, adding that “this aggression came just as the sixth round of nuclear negotiation was about to resume in Muscat yesterday.”
He said, “Iran came to the table in good faith with a new proposal aimed at bridging differences. The US however responded in bad faith. This hypocrisy undermines trust and diplomacy.”
Ambassador Iravani reiterated, “Let me be clear. Iran has not attacked Israel. Iran has not started any war. The so-called existential threat narrative is false. It has no legal basis. It is used only to justify aggression and hide Israel’s war crimes.”
“Iran warns that any country assisting Israel’s aggression will share legal responsibility for the consequences,” he said.
Ambassador Iravani concluded, “Iran will continue to exercise its right to self-defense until Israel aggression stops or the international community especially the Security Council, takes meaningful action.”

United Nations Video: Israel on Iran - Security Council Media Stakeout | United Nations
“Iran aims its missiles at children while we target the regime’s terror machine,” Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said.
Speaking to reporters today (16 Jun), Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Danny Danon, said Iran had launched more than 1,000 missiles and drones at Israeli cities over the past two days.
“In the past 48 hours, Iran has launched over 1,000 missiles and drones directly at Israeli civilians,” Danon said. “They targeted every major population center in the north, center, and south of Israel: Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Bat Yam.”
He added, “On Saturday night alone, ten people were murdered, including five Ukrainian nationals who were visiting Israel.” Displaying an image of a destroyed residential building, Danon said, “This building was hit by a direct missile strike. Several civilians were killed, two of them were children.”
He continued, “Their attacks on our civilians have left 23 dead and more than 600 injured. Last night, eight more people were murdered and almost 300 injured. Similar pictures like this one we saw in the cities of Bnei Brak, Haifa, and Petah Tikva.”
Danon said Iran “is boasting” about its attacks and added, “Iran's goal is to kill as many civilians as possible. They are not hiding it. That is a moral line between us.”
He also said Israel distinguishes between the regime and the Iranian people, “We try to minimize and, yes, if we can give a warning to civilians to move from those areas, we are doing it.” Danon said, “We have nothing against the Iranian people. I want to be clear about it. We pray for the Iranian people. We care about the Iranian people.”
Assessing the outcomes of the operation “Rising Lion” Danon said, “We pushed back the nuclear program in the last few days, and we will continue with our efforts.” He described the current campaign as “a much more challenging operation” compared to Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities in Iraq in the 1980s and Syria in 2005, adding, “It takes time.”
Responding to a question about potential U.S. involvement, Danon said the matter should be addressed by the United States, but added, “You see the chants in Tehran, it’s not only ‘Death to Israel.’ It is also ‘Death to America,’” Danon said. “They tried to assassinate not only our Prime Minister with a drone, they also tried to assassinate President Trump.”
Danon added that “many countries realize” the danger posed by Iran and said some diplomats privately “are actually thankful for Israel for fulfilling this task, of dealing with this terror regime.”
On the potential for diplomacy, Danon said, “Just to say, it’s not enough, because we saw in the last decades, they are a master of deception. They know how to play the game, how to buy time.” He said, “If they really mean it, that they are willing to give away this machine of terror and destruction, then there would be a place for dialogue. But if they are trying to buy time to play the game, we are not there.”

SECRETARY-GENERAL/G7 TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT
This afternoon, the Secretary-General will travel to Canada, where he will attend an outreach session of the G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis, in the province of Alberta. &nb
On Tuesday, he will take part in a session organized for G7 and invited leaders, entitled Energy security: diversification, technology and investment to ensure access and affordability in a changing world.
The Secretary-General will also hold bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit, including with the Prime Minister of Canada and G7 President, Mark Carney.
The Secretary-General will be back in New York on Wednesday.
MINES
In a statement today, the Secretary-General says that he is gravely concerned by recent announcements and steps taken by several Member States to withdraw from the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
These announcements are particularly troubling, as it risks weakening civilian protection and undermining two decades of a normative framework that has saved countless lives. Mr. Guterres urges all States to adhere to humanitarian disarmament treaties and immediately halt any steps towards their withdrawal. He also appeals to the 32 States that have yet to join the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention to do so without delay and to fully commit to its objectives.
To this end, the Secretary-General intends to launch a global campaign to uphold the norms of humanitarian disarmament, accelerate mine action as an enabler of human rights and sustainable development, and drive forward the vision of a mine-free world.
HYPER-PRIORITIZED HUMANITARIAN APPEAL
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) notes that today, the UN and humanitarian partners launched a hyper-prioritized global appeal aiming to help 114 million people facing life-threatening needs across the world. The appeal seeks $29 billion in funding.
OCHA points out that in the wake of the deepest funding cuts ever to hit the international humanitarian sector, the appeal further prioritizes and highlights the most urgent elements of the Global Humanitarian Overview 2025 (GHO) launched last December, but does not replace it.
Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said that the funding cuts have left the sector with brutal choices and that too many people will not get the support they need. He stressed that we, along with our partners, will save as many lives as we can with the resources we are given.
The Global Humanitarian Overview 2025 covers more than 70 countries and territories with humanitarian needs, including refugee-hosting countries. It currently calls for $44 billion. Nearly halfway through the year, just $5.6 billion – less than 13 per cent – has been received.
OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
The Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that over the past few days, attacks on civilians in Gaza have continued, including the reported killing and injury of people seeking food or other aid.
Partners working on child protection said that several children were also temporarily separated from their families, due to mass movements around the militarized distribution points. As they were reunited with their families, partners are working to help reduce risks for children near distribution points.
Over the weekend, the telecommunication cables were repaired, allowing internet services to resume. That was made possible as the Israeli authorities facilitated the access of teams sent by telecommunication companies to fix damaged cables, after multiple access denials over weeks. Partners said that today, there was another outage in central and southern Gaza, after which they also coordinated urgent repairs and succeeded in restoring connectivity.
Meanwhile, in a social media post, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said that pregnant mothers are living on a fraction of the food they need to survive. A growing number of mothers suffer from malnutrition – and one in three expectant mothers experiences a high-risk pregnancy at a time when half of the essential maternal health medicines are no longer in stock.

United Nations Video: Israel/Iran – Security Council Briefing | United Nations
Briefing by Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, on Threats to International Peace and Security.
Reaffirming the condemnation of any military escalation in the Middle East, UN senior official for political affairs Rosemary DiCarlo stressed, “We must at all costs avoid a growing conflagration which would have enormous global consequences.”
The Security Council held an emergency meeting today (13 Jun) after the Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes across Iran this morning, and in retaliation, Iran launched some 100 drones towards Israel, all of which were reportedly intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace.
While the meeting was in session, there were reports of Iranian missiles heading towards Israel, the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs told the Council.
DiCarlo underlined the obligation of Member States, “not to use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”
She reiterated the call by the Secretary-General to both sides to “show maximum restraint at this critical moment and to avoid at all costs a descent into deeper and wider regional conflict.”

BBC News Video: US President Donald Trump leaves G7 early | BBC News
"I have to be back early for obvious reasons," US President Donald Trump told reporters as he left the G7 summit in Canada a day early.
His exit came as Israel and Iran attacked each other for a fifth consecutive day.
Reports circulated that Trump had instructed the White House National Security Council to meet upon his return.
The White House was at pains to emphasise that the president had "a great day" at the summit, saying much was accomplished, including a trade deal between the US and UK.
It means the US president will miss in-person meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum that were scheduled for Tuesday, the final day of the summit.
