Video Message by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on World Press Freedom Day 2025. ----------- In a world plagued by conflict and division, World Press Freedom Day highlights a fundamental truth: Freedom for people depends on freedom of the press. Free and independent journalism is an essential public good. It’s the backbone of accountability, justice, equality and human rights. Journalists everywhere must be able to report freely and without fear or favour. When journalists are unable to work, we all lose. Tragically, this is becoming more difficult every year. And more dangerous. Journalists face attacks, detentions, censorship, intimidation, violence and even death — simply for doing their jobs. We are seeing a sharp rise in the number of journalists killed in conflict areas — particularly in Gaza. And now — as this year’s theme reminds us — press freedom faces an unprecedented threat. Artificial intelligence can support freedom of expression — or stifle it. Biased algorithms, outright lies, and hate speech are landmines on the information superhighway. Accurate, verifiable, fact-based information is the best tool to defuse them. The Global Digital Compact adopted last year includes concrete steps to strengthen international cooperation to promote information integrity, tolerance and respect in the digital space. AI must be shaped in a way that is consistent with human rights and puts facts first. And the Global Principles for Information Integrity I launched last year are supporting and informing this work as we push for a more humane information ecosystem. On this World Press Freedom Day, let’s commit to make this a reality and safeguard press freedom and the press everywhere.

Noon briefing by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - Briefings Tomorrow - Sudan - Sudan/Humanitarian - Syria - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Central African Republic - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Afghanistan - Ukraine - Haiti - Haiti/Human Rights - Refugee - Senior Personnel Appointment - Jazz Day - Financial Contribution BRIEFINGS TOMORROW Tomorrow, our guest will be Marcoluigi Corsi, the Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator ad interim for Myanmar. He will join us virtually to brief on the one-month mark of the devastating earthquakes that hit Myanmar late last month. Then, at 1 p.m., there will be a briefing here by Evangelos Sekeris, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of May. He will discuss the Council’s programme for the month. SUDAN The Secretary-General is appalled by the increasingly catastrophic situation in Sudan’s North Darfur State, as deadly attacks continue on its capital, Al Fasher, which come just two weeks after an assault on the famine-stricken Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps which reportedly killed hundreds of civilians, including humanitarian workers. With more than 400,000 people estimated to have been forced to flee the Zamzam camp alone earlier this month, the Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of harassment, intimidation and arbitrary detention of displaced people at checkpoints. Despite continuing insecurity and severe funding shortfalls, the UN and its humanitarian partners are doing what they can to urgently scale up emergency support in the Tawila area of North Darfur, which is hosting a majority of those displaced from Zamzam, and we just mentioned what we were doing in Tawila just a few minutes ago. The Secretary-General stresses that the scale of needs is overwhelming, with reports of desperate people – mostly women and children – crossing the border into Chad in search of safety and assistance. Violence against civilians also continues in other parts of Sudan, with reports of mass killings in Omdurman in Khartoum State in recent days. With the conflict now in its third year and increasingly destabilizing the broader region, the Secretary-General reiterates his call for the facilitation of safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all areas of need by all necessary routes, as well as for the protection of civilians, in line with the parties’ clear obligations under international humanitarian law. Perpetrators of serious violations must be held accountable. The Secretary-General renews his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges the international community to act with urgency to help bring an end to the relentless suffering and destruction. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is leaving his post with the Trump adminstration, according to media reports. Waltz, who was the president's principal adviser on national security issues, has had a difficult tenure amid accusations that senior officials used insecure methods of communication to conduct government business. Last month, he took responsibility for a group chat on the Signal messaging app in which high-ranking officials planned military strikes in Yemen in the company of a journalist who was inadvertently added. Waltz's deputy Alex Nelson Wong has also reportedly been removed from his post in what appears to be a shakeup of the US' security establishment. Play Video: Dramatic Drone Footage Shows Destruction of Iranian Port After Explosion

New drone footage shows the extent of the damage done to the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran after a major explosion on Saturday. It caused at least 70 deaths and left more than 1,000 people injured. It’s thought the blast was caused by improper handling of hazardous chemicals identified in some reports as an ingredient in fuel for missiles. An intelligence firm said that video footage of unusual orange-brown smoke before the explosion suggested the presence of “solid fuel intended for use in Iranian ballistic missiles". While the sale of such chemicals to Iran is restricted under US sanctions there are reports that the Islamist regime imported it from China. Anger has mounted online in the country against the government, with many blaming the disaster on incompetence and poor safety standards. Iranian officials have launched an investigation into “shortcomings” at the port, but have consistently denied that the explosion was linked to the military.
