Play Video: Middle East, G7, Occupied Palestinian Territory & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (18 June 2025)

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: Secretary-General/Middle East Secretary-General/G7 Occupied Palestinian Territory Lebanon Sudan Burkina Faso Nicaragua International Days Event SECRETARY-GENERAL/MIDDLE EAST In a statement issued today, the Secretary-General said that he remains profoundly alarmed by the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. He reiterated his call for immediate de-escalation leading to a ceasefire. He strongly appealed to all to avoid any further internationalization of the conflict. Any additional military interventions could have enormous consequences, not only for those involved but for the whole region and for international peace and security at large. The Secretary-General condemned the tragic and unnecessary loss of lives and injuries to civilians and damage to homes and critical civilian infrastructure. Diplomacy remains the best and only way to address concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security issues. The UN Charter remains our shared framework to save people from the scourge of war. The Secretary-General urged all Member States to comply fully with the Charter and international law, including international humanitarian law. SECRETARY-GENERAL/G7 The Secretary-General is on his way back to New York, after attending yesterday’s outreach session of the G7 leaders’ summit in Canada. He took part in a discussion on energy security, with a focus on diversification, technology and investment to ensure access and affordability in a changing world. This session included G7 leaders, as well as other leaders invited by the G7 to attend the outreach session. The session was closed, but the Spokesperson said that the Secretary-General emphasized that energy security is no longer about barrels and pipelines. It is about renewable energy and united action to support accessibility, to support affordability, and to support supercharge sustainable development.  Throughout the day, the Secretary-General had informal meetings with leaders attending the summit and discussed a broad range of topics, including, the current situation in the broader Middle East.   OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that amid ongoing hostilities across the Gaza Strip, attacks have continued, reportedly killing and injuring scores of people and damaging vital infrastructure.  Yesterday in Khan Younis, UN partners report that medical teams at the Nasser Medical Complex had to clear the maternity ward to make space for the injured and turn those rooms into emergency operating spaces. Many of the injured people had to undergo life-saving amputations. This follows the incident we mentioned yesterday, where people waiting for aid were killed or injured. UN partners working on health in Gaza say that every day, scores of patients across the Gaza Strip desperately need blood transfusions. But as blood stocks are very low, our partners are relying on daily collections to meet the increasing demand. In addition to shortages of medical stocks, partners working on health report that the lack of food supplies for emergency workers is causing many of them to faint, especially when they deal with mass casualty incidents. This week, in Khan Younis, in-patient admissions at field hospitals have increased threefold, largely due to access challenges at the Nasser Medical Complex in the same area. You will recall that the facility borders a displacement area imposed by the Israeli authorities. Despite the challenges, partners have established a new field hospital in Khan Younis, which will provide medical care to thousands of displaced families at the Al Mawasi camp.  UN partners report that the Internet blackout mentioned yesterday, which is affecting Deir al Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah, has continued. Today, Israeli authorities denied repair missions, depriving people in need and humanitarian workers of vital communications and of course, disrupting our aid operations. In response to questions previously asked, OCHA warns that stocks have dwindled to dangerously low levels, jeopardizing critical lifelines for the population after more than 100 days with no new fuel supplies entering the Gaza Strip.  Full highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=18%20June%202025

Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Najat Rochdi, today (17 Jun) told the Security Council that “Syria simply cannot withstand another wave of instability, noting that “the risks of further escalation in the region are not hypothetical - they are immediate, severe, and risk unravelling the fragile progress toward peace and recovery in Syria.” Rochdi told the Council that Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, continued his meetings with Syrian officials in Damascus, focussing on the importance of a genuinely inclusive and credible political transition in the country. She said, “the protection and safety of all components of Syrian society and the prevention of incitement of communal tensions are absolute cornerstones for stability,” and pointed out that, “sporadic violent incidents continued in Homs, Hama, the coastal areas, and other regions, including killings, kidnappings, and infringements on individual liberties.” The Special Envoy said, “the southwest saw a serious incident of Israeli artillery fire and airstrikes on military sites and weapons depots across southern Syria, in response to a rare incident of small rocket fires out of Syria into the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan – claimed by two groups unaffiliated with the interim authorities.” She said, the interim authorities had “denied any involvement in the rocket fire,” and added that “last week, there were Israeli incursions, arrests, and drone strikes in Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside.” Rochdi said, “these attacks are unacceptable and must cease.” For her part, Joyce Msuya, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said that the UN and partners continue to provide critical assistance to the people in need. Msuya said, “while the reduction in conflict and growing engagement with international partners are opening new prospects for investing in Syria’s future – we must not forget that three quarters of the population still need humanitarian relief right now. Security remains volatile in parts of the country – including in the coast, the south and the north east – where attacks continue to affect civilians and humanitarian operations. Over 7 million people remain displaced, including many newly uprooted by recent violence.” She underscored the need for more funding, as the humanitarian appeal for Syria has received only 260 million US dollars, just 14 percent of the requirements for the current period. United States Ambassador Dorothy Shea told the Council that the US is working towards ceasing sanctions on Syria.

Play Video: “Most Terrifying” Attack on Kyiv: Russia launches missile and drone attack

This was the moment a Russian drone hit a high rise residential building in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Emergency services quickly responded to the chaos on the ground, after one of the largest aerial attacks on the city since Russia’s invasion began. Here’s what we know so far: Drone and missile attacks were launched by Russia across several sites in the capital, including the Solomyanskyi district. According to Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, some 27 locations in different districts came under attack. Air raid alerts sounded for seven hours from late Monday into early Tuesday morning, as hundreds of drones swarmed over the city. The Key Details: So far, it is believed that 14 people have been killed in the attacks - one of them an American citizen. Over 50 have been wounded, but rescuers are still searching through the rubble for more survivors. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said over 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight in what he described as “one of the most terrifying attacks on Kyiv”. Simultaneous drone strikes also hit the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, killing at least one person. Here’s The Context: The strikes come as US President Donald Trump announced his early departure from the G7 summit in Canada, reportedly because of tensions in the Middle East. This means he will miss a key meeting with President Zelensky, which Ukrainian officials were hoping would have advanced their cause, amid Russia’s amplification of airborne attacks in recent weeks. Nevertheless, the UK and its allies are expected to announce new sanctions on Russia this week. The Reaction: Ukraine’s foreign ministry wrote on X: “Russia’s campaign of terror against civilians continues. Its war against Ukraine escalates with increased brutality.” Russia, meanwhile, has claimed it launched “high-precision” strikes, against military-industrial sites in the capital.
