Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Najat Rochdi, today (17 Jun) told the Security Council that “Syria simply cannot withstand another wave of instability, noting that “the risks of further escalation in the region are not hypothetical - they are immediate, severe, and risk unravelling the fragile progress toward peace and recovery in Syria.” Rochdi told the Council that Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, continued his meetings with Syrian officials in Damascus, focussing on the importance of a genuinely inclusive and credible political transition in the country. She said, “the protection and safety of all components of Syrian society and the prevention of incitement of communal tensions are absolute cornerstones for stability,” and pointed out that, “sporadic violent incidents continued in Homs, Hama, the coastal areas, and other regions, including killings, kidnappings, and infringements on individual liberties.” The Special Envoy said, “the southwest saw a serious incident of Israeli artillery fire and airstrikes on military sites and weapons depots across southern Syria, in response to a rare incident of small rocket fires out of Syria into the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan – claimed by two groups unaffiliated with the interim authorities.” She said, the interim authorities had “denied any involvement in the rocket fire,” and added that “last week, there were Israeli incursions, arrests, and drone strikes in Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside.” Rochdi said, “these attacks are unacceptable and must cease.” For her part, Joyce Msuya, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said that the UN and partners continue to provide critical assistance to the people in need. Msuya said, “while the reduction in conflict and growing engagement with international partners are opening new prospects for investing in Syria’s future – we must not forget that three quarters of the population still need humanitarian relief right now. Security remains volatile in parts of the country – including in the coast, the south and the north east – where attacks continue to affect civilians and humanitarian operations. Over 7 million people remain displaced, including many newly uprooted by recent violence.” She underscored the need for more funding, as the humanitarian appeal for Syria has received only 260 million US dollars, just 14 percent of the requirements for the current period. United States Ambassador Dorothy Shea told the Council that the US is working towards ceasing sanctions on Syria.

Addressing reporters, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, said that “despite the clearly terrorist nature” of recent attacks on passenger trains in the Bryansk and Voronezh regions of Russia, “some well-known delegations” refused to engage constructively with a Russian draft resolution condemning the incidents. The attacks, which occurred on May 31, June 1, and June 5, killed seven civilians and injured over 100. “Our draft was based entirely on previously agreed Security Council language,” Nebenzya said today (17 Jun), citing resolution 1373 and relevant international law. “It sought to reaffirm the very basic principle of the Council's approach in this domain, namely, that terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable regardless of motivation,” he added. Nebenzya said Russia had hoped the Council would send “a strong signal demonstrating unity,” but according to the ambassador some “delegations resorted to politicization and artificial linkage of these terrorist attacks to the broader context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.” Nebenzya also said, “To our disappointment, our proposal to adopt a Statement of the President of the Security Council in order to welcome and encourage interaction between Russia and Ukraine on reunification of Ukrainian children who may have lost contact with their families was also blocked.” According to the ambassador, during direct talks in Istanbul on June 2, Ukraine handed over a list of 339 children who had lost contact with their families. Nebenzya said, “The reality is that the Russian Federation was never engaged in illegal deportation of Ukrainian children, but it has evacuated a number of children from the battle areas for the sake of their own safety. Some of them lost contact with their relatives. We have constantly worked to reestablish it and will continue to do so.” When asked about a potential U.S.-Russia mediation of Iran-Israel conflict, Nebenzya confirmed, “There was a conversation between President Putin and President Trump the other day, and President Putin said that we are ready to do what we can - to facilitate. That was said directly to President Trump.” He concluded, “In that sense, yes, we are coordinating, but we don't have any mediation efforts on the ground.”

Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani told reporters, “Just hours ago, Israeli regime deliberately targeted the office of Iran's News Agency during a live broadcast. This appalling attack constituted a blatant war crime and a direct assault on press freedom. The Israeli regime has once again demonstrated that it is the foremost enemy of truth.” Ambassador Iravani spoke to reporter today (16 Jun) in New York. He said, “Israel has committed a blatant act of aggression against the sovereign and territorial integrity of Iran,” adding that “its relentless campaign of atrocities against our people continues unabated.” The Iranian Ambassador stressed, “This is a serious violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law. These attacks crossed all red lines.” “Most alarmingly, Israel deliberately targeted a peaceful nuclear facility operating under full IAEA safety guards,” Ambassador Iravani said, highlighting that “this is a dangerous and illegal act.” “It poses a serious risk of releasing radioactive material. if Iran had not immediately contained the situation, the consequences could have been catastrophic. Israeli claim of surgical strike is false and misleading,” he added. Speaking about the attack on the Iran's News Agency, Ambassador Iravani said that Israel “holds a disgraceful record of being the world's leading perpetrator of violence against journalists and media professionals.” He continued, “In response to this barbaric attack and aggression, Iran exercise its inherent right to self-defense in line with article 51 of Charter. Our response was defensive, targeted and proportionate. It is solely aimed at deterring and preventing the recurrence of such crimes. Iran will resolutely defend its security and territorial integrity.” “Iran does not seek war or escalation, but we will not hesitate to defend our people, our territory and our sovereignty. Unlike the Israeli regime, Iran respects the international humanitarian law. We did not target civilians," the Iranian Ambassador said. Ambassador Iravani also said, “The US forces supported Israeli aggression. Without the US weapons, intelligence and political backing, this attack could not have happened.” “The United States will share responsibility for this unlawful act,” he stressed, adding that “this aggression came just as the sixth round of nuclear negotiation was about to resume in Muscat yesterday.” He said, “Iran came to the table in good faith with a new proposal aimed at bridging differences. The US however responded in bad faith. This hypocrisy undermines trust and diplomacy.” Ambassador Iravani reiterated, “Let me be clear. Iran has not attacked Israel. Iran has not started any war. The so-called existential threat narrative is false. It has no legal basis. It is used only to justify aggression and hide Israel’s war crimes.” “Iran warns that any country assisting Israel’s aggression will share legal responsibility for the consequences,” he said. Ambassador Iravani concluded, “Iran will continue to exercise its right to self-defense until Israel aggression stops or the international community especially the Security Council, takes meaningful action.”

French police are struggling to halt a potentially record-breaking surge of people from reaching the UK in small boats organised by a growing network of smuggling gangs. Downing Street has said the situation is “deteriorating." Although the French authorities claim they’re now intercepting more than two thirds of those boats before they reach the sea, the smugglers are now changing tactics to launch so-called “taxi-boats” from new sites, in new ways, and with ever greater speed. Instead of inflating their boats in the dunes along the coast, close to police patrols, the gangs are launching them from better hidden locations, often dozens of kilometres from the main departure beaches. They then cruise along the coastline, like taxis or buses, picking up their paying customers who now wait in the sea, out of reach of the police. Andrew Harding reports from Calais. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran "will never compromise with Zionists", in a series of posts on X. "We will show the Zionists no mercy," a translation of the post reads. In a different post, he says "the battle begins". Israel said it struck a centrifuge site in Tehran and weapons facilities as part of its overnight barrage, whilst Iran launched its own attacks on Israel, with sirens sounding twice overnight. Israeli military officials said strikes which took place last Friday were a pre-emptive attack, to damage Iran’s nuclear programme, as Iran was reaching “the point of no return”, though they have provided no evidence of that. The latest assessments of the international community, including from the US, have indicated that Iran had not made a decision to weaponize its nuclear programme, something it had abandoned in 2003. Iran, a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), says it has the right to a peaceful nuclear programme, and has consistently denied it is seeking a nuclear weapon. Donald Trump has demanded Iran’s unconditional surrender saying the US may kill the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Writing on Truth Social, the US President stated: “We know exactly where the so-called Supreme Leader is hiding”, and described Ayatollah Khamenei as an “easy target”. Mr Trump said: “we are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now". He went on to say “our patience is wearing thin”. In another post he demanded Iran's "unconditional surrender". Mr Trump held a meeting with his national security advisers at the White House as more US warplanes headed for the Middle East. There’s mounting speculation that the US could join Israel directly in its war with Iran, which began five days ago with Israeli attacks on nuclear sites. Israel has said its aim is to prevent Iran building a nuclear weapon. However many of Iran’s nuclear sites are deep underground and only the US has weapons powerful enough to threaten them. Millions of Iranians have been fleeing the capital Tehran where there have been reports of more explosions, with major roads out of the city gridlocked. Iran warned people in Israel to evacuate the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa. Play Video: “Most Terrifying” Attack on Kyiv: Russia launches missile and drone attack

This was the moment a Russian drone hit a high rise residential building in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Emergency services quickly responded to the chaos on the ground, after one of the largest aerial attacks on the city since Russia’s invasion began. Here’s what we know so far: Drone and missile attacks were launched by Russia across several sites in the capital, including the Solomyanskyi district. According to Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, some 27 locations in different districts came under attack. Air raid alerts sounded for seven hours from late Monday into early Tuesday morning, as hundreds of drones swarmed over the city. The Key Details: So far, it is believed that 14 people have been killed in the attacks - one of them an American citizen. Over 50 have been wounded, but rescuers are still searching through the rubble for more survivors. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said over 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight in what he described as “one of the most terrifying attacks on Kyiv”. Simultaneous drone strikes also hit the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, killing at least one person. Here’s The Context: The strikes come as US President Donald Trump announced his early departure from the G7 summit in Canada, reportedly because of tensions in the Middle East. This means he will miss a key meeting with President Zelensky, which Ukrainian officials were hoping would have advanced their cause, amid Russia’s amplification of airborne attacks in recent weeks. Nevertheless, the UK and its allies are expected to announce new sanctions on Russia this week. The Reaction: Ukraine’s foreign ministry wrote on X: “Russia’s campaign of terror against civilians continues. Its war against Ukraine escalates with increased brutality.” Russia, meanwhile, has claimed it launched “high-precision” strikes, against military-industrial sites in the capital. As Israel and Iran trade blows for a fifth day, President Trump has been keeping people guessing over what he might do. [Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe] Last night he sparked panic in Tehran, telling everyone in the city to evacuate, before leaving the G7 summit in Canada a day early. Returning to Washington, he said he didn't just want a ceasefire, but a 'real end' to the war. And now he's calling for an "unconditional surrender", telling Tehran we have total control of your skies. And the US military is reported to be moving fighter jets to the Middle East. ------- Get more news at our site - https://www.channel4.com/news/ Follow us: TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/
