Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: Secretary-General/BRICS Deputy Secretary-General Texas Ukraine / Russia Occupied Palestinian Territory Sudan South Sudan Syria Haiti Myanmar Kiswahili Language Day Financial Contribution SECRETARY-GENERAL/BRICS The Secretary-General is in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, where he is attending the 17th Summit of the BRICS countries. This morning, addressing an outreach session on "Environment, COP30 and global health”, Mr. Guterres warned that our environment is being attacked on all fronts. The Secretary-General pointed out that across the world, lives and livelihoods are being ripped apart, and sustainable development gains left in tatters as disasters accelerate. He said that the most vulnerable and the poorer pay the highest price and stressed that we need to tackle the point where climate and health meet. The Secretary-General emphasized we need governments to build on the progress of last year’s biodiversity COP, particularly reaching an ambitious agreement on finance, adding that we need to make COP30 a success, and as you know COP30 will be held in Brazil this year. Yesterday, addressing an outreach session on “Strengthening multilateralism, economic-financial affairs and artificial intelligence", the Secretary-General said that artificial intelligence is reshaping economies and societies, and that the fundamental test is how wisely we guide this transformation. The Secretary-General also emphasized that AI cannot be a club of the few, but must benefit all, and in particular, developing countries which must have a real voice in the governance of artificial intelligence. The Secretary-General is also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings with some leaders who are attending BRICS. We will share the readouts with you as we receive them. DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL The Deputy Secretary-General, over the weekend, was representing the Secretary-General at the official commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Cabo Verde. Today, she is in The Gambia where she met with President Adama Barrow and other senior government officials to strengthen the relationship between the United Nations and the Gambia. She also discussed with him national efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Deputy Secretary-General is currently meeting with youth and women stakeholders, and she is expected to highlight the importance of investing in youth skills and women’s economic empowerment as a strategic lever for advancing the SDGs. Tomorrow, she will travel to Cameroon to also represent the Secretary-General and this time she will be representing him at the International Conference on the Sustainable Blue Economy in the Gulf of Guinea. Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: Secretary-General/Trip Announcement Deputy Secretary-General Gaza  Occupied Palestinian Territory Lebanon Cyprus Ukraine Russia Senior Personnel Appointment   Yemen Global Risk Report International Days Financial Contribution SECRETARY-GENERAL/TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT The Secretary-General will be arriving in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th Summit of the BRICS countries. The Secretary-General has been invited to speak at an outreach session on “Strengthening multilateralism, economic-financial affairs and artificial intelligence", that will take place on Sunday, 6 July. On Monday, 7 July, he will address a second outreach session, on "Environment, COP30 and global health.” During his visit, the Secretary-General will also be having meetings with various leaders who are attending the BRICS Summit and we will share those readouts with you. DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL Our Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, returned to Seville today for the closing of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4). At the closing with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, she underscored the consensus around the Seville Agreement as a demonstration of multilateralism in action — with actions to close the SDG financing gap, address the debt crisis, and reform the international financial architecture. She recognized the more than 100 initiatives launched on the Sevilla Platform for Action, including solidarity levies on private jets and first-class travel to generate new resources for sustainable development. She said that the UN will be operationalizing a Seville Forum on Debt to help countries learn from one another and coordinate their approaches in debt management and restructuring; that forum will be supported by Spain. She called for FFD4 to be remembered not only as a conference that responded to crisis, but as the moment the world chose cooperation over fragmentation, unity over division, and action over inertia. Tomorrow, she will travel to Praia, Cabo Verde, to take part in celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. GAZA  The Secretary-General is appalled by the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Multiple attacks in recent days hitting sites hosting displaced people and people trying to access food have killed and injured scores of Palestinians. The Secretary-General strongly condemns the civilian loss of life.  In just one day this week, Israeli orders to relocate forced nearly 30,000 people to flee, yet again, with no safe place to go and clearly inadequate supplies of shelter, food, medicine or water. International humanitarian law is unambiguous: civilians must be respected and protected, and the needs of the population must be met. With no fuel having entered Gaza in more than 17 weeks, the Secretary-General is gravely concerned that the last lifelines for survival are being cut off. Without an urgent influx of fuel, incubators will shut down, ambulances will be unable to reach the injured and sick, and water cannot be purified. The delivery by the United Nations and partners of what little of our lifesaving humanitarian aid is left in Gaza will also grind to a halt.  He once again calls for full, safe and sustained humanitarian access so aid can reach people who have been deprived of the basics of life for far too long. The UN has a clear and proven plan, rooted in the humanitarian principles, to get vital assistance to civilians – safely and at scale, wherever they are.  The Secretary-General reiterates that all parties must uphold their obligations under international law. He renews his call for an immediate permanent ceasefire and for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.  Full Highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=03%20July%202025

A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and are advocating for a bold solution: degrowth. Originating in France, the degrowth movement has spread to places like Japan, the UK and Barcelona, taking root in academia, grassroots organisations and among university students. The movement argues for a 'democratisation of the economy' and for collectively managing key resources, like housing. Critics argue that opposing economic growth is impractical and warn of negative consequences, especially for the most vulnerable. We take a look at the theory - and ask what the practice might look like. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #BBCNews

Two people have reportedly died of gunshot wounds after police opened fire during protests in Kenya, the latest in a wave of anti-government rallies that began last year. Dr Aron Sikuku, a medic at Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi on the outskirts of Nairobi, told the BBC that two bodies had been taken to the facility and had died from gunshot wounds. He said hundreds of protesters had gathered outside his hospital demanding to take away the bodies. As of now, there has been no official confirmation of the deaths. Play Video: Texas Floods | Worst Fears Confirmed With 27 Dead at Camp Mystic

At least 82 people have now been found dead in Texas, as devastating flash floods overwhelmed several areas of the U.S. state. At least 41 people are still missing. Some have questioned whether officials could have done more to warn people, after recent cuts to the National Weather Service. The Guadalupe River burst its banks on Friday at 4am local time, causing the deluge, which Texas Representative Chip Roy called a “once in a century flood”. Kerr County was the worst affected area, with at least 10 young girls and one councilor still missing from Camp Mystic - a Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River. Camp Mystic confirmed that at least 27 people there have already died, and they are working with local and state officials to locate those who are still missing. They said: “This tragedy has devastated us and our entire community. Our hearts are broken alongside the families that are enduring this tragedy, and we share their hope and prayers”. Two people have also been found dead in Kendall County, alongside at least 4 in Burnet County. At least one person has died in both Williamson and Tom Green counties. Texas Governor Greg Abbott assured rescue efforts would continue around the clock to find those missing, and urged relatives of people who were camping there to contact the authorities. He indicated that the danger is not over, as further heavy rain could produce more flash floods. US President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration on Friday, which activated the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Texas. He said that it is likely that he will visit on Friday. Kyiv in Turmoil After Russia’s BIGGEST Aerial Attack on the City
Play Video: Kyiv in Turmoil After Russia’s BIGGEST Aerial Attack on the City

These videos show what Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv, looked like overnight, as Russia launched its largest aerial attack on the city since the war began in 2022. Here's what we know so far: According to Ukrainian authorities, last night’s strikes hit almost every district of the capital. Air raid sirens sounded for over eight hours in Kyiv, which according to the Ukrainian Air Force, was the ‘main target of the strikes’. Thousands of people took refuge in underground shelters and the city’s subway tunnels. The key details: Ukraine claims Russia deployed 550 drones and 11 missiles in the attack, making it the largest Russian attack on the area throughout the entire war. 72 of the 550 drones launched were able to penetrate air defences - an increase from the previous record of 537 which were launched last Saturday night. The attack injured at least 20 people, as well as destroying infrastructure and residential buildings in the area. Here's the context: These attacks come as part of a string of recent major Russian air strikes in Ukraine, showing that ceasefire talks have been largely unsuccessful. In a lengthy phone call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin maintained that Russia will achieve its goals - namely to eliminate the root causes which they say led to the current state of affairs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that this call took place ‘almost simultaneously’ with the first air raid alerts in Ukraine. The reaction: Zelenskyy took to X to reflect on the attack. Despite the phone call between Trump and Putin, he said that Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror. Putting pressure on US President Donal Trump, he also said that Russia must feel appropriate sanctions, and it depends, primarily, on the United States. Trump had expressed his frustration towards Putin after their phone call, saying he was ‘disappointed’ in him. The two leaders are expected to speak on the phone today about the paused US shipments of military aid to Ukraine.
