The overarching theme of the Conference is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”. The Conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and identify further ways and means to support the implementation of SDG 14. It will build on existing instruments to form successful partnerships towards the swift conclusion and effective implementation of ongoing processes that contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. It’s the first time a US president has deployed the National Guard in the face of civil unrest since the LA riots in 1992. President Trump said: “We'll send whatever we need to make sure there's law and order.” However Mr Trump’s Democrat opponents have said the administration's use of masked immigration officers with military gear to arrest civilians in restaurants and shops has been inflammatory and the president's eagerness to deploy trained soldiers was unwarranted.
