In June 2022, an International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Working Group of experts assembled to re-evaluate occupational exposure as a firefighter as a carcinogen. This webinar gives an overview of IARC’s decision and evidence to classify firefighting as a human carcinogen (Group I). Members of the Working Group highlight exposures to firefighters, cancer epidemiology in firefighters, and underlying carcinogenic mechanism evidence for this decision. Two experts conclude the webinar by providing best intervention and prevention practices for firefighters and discuss the broader impacts of this decision. At the beginning of this video, a breast epithelial cell is in the cell cycle stage of duplicating its genome. The bright points appearing in the cell’s nucleus indicate where DNA is being replicated. For weeks, Gretchen and Jason Biringer thought their 7-year-old son, Evan, had the flu because the typically energetic boy was lethargic. When Evan’s nailbeds turned purple and he had trouble breathing, they took him to the local emergency room, and he was then transported via helicopter to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. The family learned that Evan had biventricular heart failure and would need a heart transplant. During this difficult time, the care team at the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Congenital Heart Center was very attentive, and listened to any concerns that the family had. Evan received a new heart, and the now 8-year-old is in school and enjoys playing soccer. #PediatricHeartTransplant #JohnsHopkinsChildrensCenter National Donate Life Month is dedicated to raising awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation, honoring those who have saved lives through donation and encouraging individuals to register as donors. In this video, Gretchen, Jason and Evan Biringer discuss their transplant donation experience at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. https://hopkinschildrens.org/heart
