Like many island economies, Dominica experiences high youth unemployment, and recent events, in particular Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic, have combined to make the search for work even harder.
A UN-backed initiative designed to improve the employment options for young Dominicans, Work Online Dominica, has been successful in helping them to overcome the barriers they face on a small, remote island.
Conor Lennon from UN News met aspiring photographer Josiah Johnson, a graduate of the programme, in Dominica’s capital, Roseau, to find out how he, and other young people, have benefited from Work Online Dominica.

United Nations Video: Gaza Conflict Aggravates Instability in Yemen | Security Council Briefing | United Nations
Briefing by Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, on the situation in the Middle East (Yemen) during the 9623rd meeting of the Security Council.
In his address to the Council, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths said, “the last seven months of misery and pain in the wider region – of course I am referring to the conflict in the Middle East in Gaza - have added to instability in Yemen. Attacks on vessels and around the Red Sea who disrupted global trade, but we cannot - we must not - let developments in the region of the Red Sea stand in the way of peace in Yemen.”
Griffiths told the Council that this was the reason why Special Envoy Grundberg and his team “were insistent on the need for protecting the gains that have been made and moving back towards that ceasefire.”

SECRETARY-GENERAL/ GAZA
The Secretary-General was deeply saddened to learn of the death of a United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) staff member and injury to another DSS staffer when their UN vehicle was struck as they traveled to the European Hospital in Rafah this morning.
The Secretary-General condemns all attacks on UN personnel and calls for a full investigation. He sends his condolences to the family of the fallen staff member.
With the conflict in Gaza continuing to take a heavy toll – not only on civilians, but also on humanitarian workers – the Secretary-General reiterates his urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for the release of all hostages.
OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that ground incursions and heavy fighting continue to be reported in eastern Rafah, as well as Gaza city and the Jabaliya Refugee Camp.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reports that nearly 360,000 people have fled Rafah since the first evacuation order a week ago. Many of them have already been displaced multiple times already over the past seven months.
Meanwhile, evacuation orders issued on Saturday for northern Gaza, amid ongoing Israeli bombardment there, have resulted in the displacement of some 100,000 people so far.
The UN remains deeply concerned about the lack of protection for civilians – and the lack of safety for humanitarian operations. Civilians must be protected and have their basic needs met, whether they move or stay. Those who leave must have enough time to do so, as well as a safe route and a safe place to go.
The UN continues to advocate for concrete assurance and actionable measures to facilitate the safe and secure movement of humanitarian cargo, via all routes, into and throughout the Gaza Strip.
OCHA reports that as of today, the Rafah crossing remains closed – and there is a continued lack of safe and logistically viable access to the Kerem Shalom crossing.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the incursion into Rafah has jeopardized the provision of health services, access to health care, and the delivery of life-saving supplies.
WHO says that fuel shortages are also threatening the continuity of humanitarian efforts – saying that partners working on health care in Gaza require a minimum of 46,000 litres of fuel every day just for their operations. In case of an expanded military operation in Rafah, WHO warns there would be a heightened demand for fuel.
Further on Gaza, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, warned yesterday that the military offensive in Rafah spells further catastrophe for more than a million people who had been displaced to the city to escape fighting, disease and hunger elsewhere. Ms. Msuya was speaking at an aid conference on Gaza hosted by Kuwait over the weekend.

United Nations Video: Yemen: Hostilities Continue, Announcements by Ansar Allah to Expand Attacks are Worrisome
Briefing by Hans Grundberg, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, on the situation in the Middle East (Yemen) during the 9623rd meeting of the Security Council.
The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, today (13 May) told the Security Council that despite some positive developments, hostilities continue in Yemen, and “announcements by Ansar Allah to expand the scope of attacks are a worrisome provocation in an already volatile situation.”
Addressing the Council via video teleconference from Aden, Grundberg said, “although we have witnessed a reduction in attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean, as well as reduced numbers of US and UK airstrikes against land based targets within Yemen, hostilities continue. Announcements by Ansar Allah to expand the scope of attacks are a worrisome provocation in an already volatile situation.”
The Special Envoy told the Council that inside Yemen, “the security situation along the front lines has remained contained in the past month,” but still, he expressed concern about “the continuation of military activity in the form of shelling, sniper fire, intermittent fighting, drone attacks, and troop movements in Al Dhale, Hudaydah, Lahj, Ma’rib, Sa’adah, Shabwa and Ta’iz.”
Grundberg described his three-pronged approach to the peace process in Yemen, including engagement with the parties to make progress on the UN Roadmap; exploring avenues for de-escalation and confidence building; as well as continuing preparations for a nationwide ceasefire and the resumption of an inclusive political process.

Russian forces have been gaining ground in their most significant advance in Ukraine for many months.
Troops crossed the border from Russia, north of Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv, seizing territory in a surprise new offensive.
It follows months of largely static fighting over defensive positions in the east and south of Ukraine, where Russia has held territory occupied since its invasion in 2022.
Ukrainian forces appear to have been caught by surprise by the opening of the new front north of Kharkiv. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the area. The Russian advance could directly threaten Kharkiv if its forces reach artillery range of the city.

BBC News Video: Thousands evacuated after wildfires in British Columbia, Canada. #Climate #Wildfire #BBCNews
This unverified video purports to show the moment Russian troops made contact with Ukrainian border guards, as they began a new offensive in the Kharkiv region.
Russian forces now say they are ‘deep’ into Ukrainian defensive lines and have intensified their attacks on the northeastern border with Ukraine, and have seized up to nine villages.
Vovchansk, in Kharkiv region, has become a focal point in the battle.
Civilians are being evacuated from the area as fighting takes place on the outskirts of the town.
There are conflicting reports about the situation on the ground.
Ukraine’s military says that the situation in the town is under control, while Russian sources say that the western and northern areas of Vovchansk have been seized by their forces.
Unverified footage shows Russian troops looting local homes.
Ukrainian forces have voiced concerns about what could happen if the enemy comes within artillery range of Kharkiv.
Zelenskyy has stressed the need for more air defences to protect his country’s second-largest city, during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Last month US Congress approved a $60 billion aid package, most of which will go towards replenishing Ukraine’s struggling artillery supply and air defences.
Blinken promised that those weapons were ‘on the way’, and that some had already arrived.

ODN Video: Explosives Used In Controlled Demolition Of Baltimore Bridge Debris
Crews have carried out a controlled demolition of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
The remains of the collapsed bridge had been blocking the river, which is one of the busiest sea routes in the United States.
The demolition marks a major step forward in freeing the Dali container ship, which has been stuck in the wreckage.
21 crew members are still on board, maintaining the ship, but all were safe during the demolition.
The mission had previously been set back due to bad weather.
It’s been 49 days since the bridge was tragically hit by the container ship, causing it to collapse.
The collision killed six construction workers, and saw 4,000 tonnes of debris fall into the river below.
The body of the last victim of the incident was recovered last week.
Officials predict that rebuilding the bridge will cost nearly $2 billion.

ODN Video: WATCH The Dramatic Moment A Russian Apartment Block Is Struck By Missile
This is the moment a ten-storey apartment block dramatically collapsed to the ground in the Belgorod region of Russia, near the border with Ukraine.
Russian authorities blame Kyiv for the attack, which they called a ‘terrorist attack on residential areas’.
They say it was struck by a Soviet-era missile, which was shot down by Russian forces.
It is one of the deadliest attacks to hit the Russian side of the border since its invasion of Ukraine.
At least 15 people were killed and 27 wounded.
Three more were killed in separate rounds of shelling elsewhere in the city.
The rest of the building is still at high risk of collapse.
Residents have been evacuated, but are being allowed into the building one at a time to collect important items.
The Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the attack.

ODN Video: Drone Footage Shows Huge Numbers of Israeli Tanks Amassing Near Rafah
The IDF have released a video showing their scaled up operation taking place in Rafah.
The footage shows dozens of tanks and military vehicles operating in the area.
Smoke could also be seen over the Gaza skyline on Friday as Israel's offensive continued.
It comes after Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel can "stand alone" after the US warned they will not provide weapon shipments if a full-scale invasion of Rafah goes ahead in Gaza.
In his statement he also stated: “I have said that if necessary we will fight with our fingernails."
US President Joe Biden advised Israel to refrain from proceeding with the operation, expressing concerns that it could worsen the humanitarian crisis currently affecting Palestinians.
Israel has consistently issued threats of launching an offensive in Rafah, where more than half of the population, around 1.3 million Palestinians, have taken shelter.
According to the UN agency, over 110,000 people have fled Rafah and food and fuel supplies are critically low.
Local health officials have said the death toll from the war in Gaza has now increased to more than 34,500 people, and has led to the destruction of apartments, hospitals, mosques and schools across several cities.

International Video: Fierce fighting on Russia-Ukraine border signals new front in war
A large section of a ten storey apartment block has collapsed in the Russian city of Belgorod - killing at least seven people and injuring 17. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Russian officials say it was hit by a Soviet-era missile, launched by Ukraine and shot down by Russia.
Over the border, Ukraine's military chief says his forces are doing all they can to hold the line in the Kharkiv region, where Russia has launched a major assault.
Today, Moscow said it had seized another four villages there, on top of five it announced yesterday.
By stepping up attacks towards Kharkiv, Russia could force Ukrainian troops to divert from the east to the northeast, weakening their defensive line in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is already under huge strain after recent attacks on the cities of Avdiivka and Chasiv Yar.
A warning, you may find some of the images distressing.
