(5) Mayor Eric Adams (D-New York City) defends the police department's arrests of nearly 300 pro-Palestinian protesters at City College of New York and Columbia University, where the protesters had taken over a campus building. Mayor Adams says 'outside agitators' are behind the violence and lawbreaking. In Washington, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) condemns what she calls the "escalating repression of First Amendment protected speech on college campuses." House passes a bill to require the Education Department enforce anti-discrimination laws when it comes to antisemitism using a specific definition. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) says she will force a vote next week on whether to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his job, even though the motion to vacate is almost certain to fail, because many Democrats and Republicans say they plan to oppose it. Rep. Greene says she wants all Members on the record supporting what she calls the "uniparty". Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announces no change in interest rates because of what he says is a “lack of further progress” in getting inflation back down to the Fed's target of 2%. Three Democratic Senators reintroduce a bill to legalize cannabis at the federal level in response to the news that the Biden Administration is moving to reclassify cannabis as a lower-risk drug. UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty faces criticism at House and Senate hearings about the company's handling of a cyberattack that put millions of patients' data at risk and threatened hospitals financial stability. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Acting Labor Sec Julie Su testify before House committees on their department proposed FY2025 budgets.
