Participating in youth sports is an excellent way for kids to take on more responsibility and discipline. There are many physical and mental demands that come with playing a sport, and protecting your child’s eyesight is one thing you need to be acutely aware of. Specifically in developmental years, preserving a young athlete's vision is critical to their ability to participate.
Here are some of the best ways to protect a young athlete’s eyes!
Wear Sunglasses
Sunlight is healthy in small doses, but prolonged exposure can increase the risk of damage to the eyes. Things like cataracts, age-related degeneration, and increased tension headaches can result from excessive exposure to UV light and squinting. In addition, squinting and playing in hard-to-see situations can impair an athlete's ability to perform at their best.
Invest in Prescription Goggles
Sport-specific eyewear is an investment—one that could save a child's eyesight. In highly active circumstances where balls are coming at a child's face or quick movements occur, the right pair of prescription sports goggles might prevent a catastrophic injury. Goggles should fit comfortably on the face; discuss your best options with your healthcare provider.
Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle contributes to overall bodily wellness. Eating nutrient-rich foods and balancing hydration demands can decrease the risk of eye diseases. Also, controlling chronic conditions like diabetes can significantly affect how well vision responds in various scenarios.
Ask About Your Family History
Discussing health history with family is critical. Genetically speaking, we inherit many underlying conditions from family members who carried certain genes previously. Poor eyesight is one of those things that we can inherit and ultimately be proactive about.
Get a Routine Eye Exam
One of the easiest and best ways to protect a young athlete’s eyes is by scheduling routine eye exams. Receiving a comprehensive eye exam with dilation can determine the quality of one’s vision and pinpoint any flaws. Ensure you discuss the best care plans with your optometrist and learn how frequently a young athlete should receive examinations.

CRITICAL TRANSITION MINERALS
The Secretary-General launched the Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals.
The panel brings together a diverse group of governments and other stakeholders to help embed justice in the ever-growing demand for minerals for clean energy technologies.
The Secretary-General underscored that justice is at the heart of this initiative: justice for the communities where critical minerals are found; justice for developing countries in production and trade; and justice in the global energy revolution.
For developing countries with large reserves, critical minerals are a critical opportunity: To create jobs, diversify economies, and dramatically boost revenues. Critical minerals could be a golden ticket to sustainable development, but only if they are managed properly, the Secretary-General stressed.
The work of the Panel will be co-chaired by Ambassador Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko of South Africa and Ditte Juul Jørgensen, the Director-General for Energy of the European Commission. They will be supported by a technical secretariat led by the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Team, the UN Environment Programme and the UN Trade and Development and comprised of over a dozen UN system entities.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, is in the United Arab Emirates.
Since her arrival yesterday, she held meetings with senior government officials, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan; the Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy; the Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of Multilateral Affairs and Former Permanent Representative to the UN, Lana Nusseibeh; and Mohammed Abdullah al-Gergawi, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Discussions centred on the situation in the Middle East, the UN-UAE relationship and accelerating action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) leading up to the Summit of the Future.
SUDAN
The United Nations is receiving increasingly alarming reports of a dramatic escalation of tensions between armed groups in El Fasher.
The Rapid Support Forces are reportedly encircling the city, suggesting that a coordinated move to attack the city may be imminent. Simultaneously, the Sudanese Armed Forces appear to be positioning themselves.
The UN continuously warns that an attack on the city would have devastating consequences for the civilian population, in an area already on the brink of famine.
On 15 April, the Secretary-General spoke to you, and he reiterated his call on all parties to refrain from fighting in the El Fasher area.
The Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, is engaging with the parties to de-escalate tensions there.
Also, for his part, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, today expressed his grave concerns. He stated that at least 43 people, among them women and children, were killed as fighting was taking place between the two rival forces – backed by their respective allied militia – since 14 April.

BBC News Video: King Charles to resume some public engagements as cancer treatment continues | BBC News
King Charles is to resume some public engagements after encouraging progress in his cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace has said.
However it won't be a full return to official engagements for the King, who began his treatment in February.
The type of cancer has not been disclosed. The palace said the King’s doctors were "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the King's continued recovery". However they said it was “too early to say” how much longer his treatment would continue.
King Charles will begin his partial return to public engagements with a symbolic trip to a cancer treatment centre. The palace said he would undertake more external engagements and host a state visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
A picture of the King and Queen Camilla, taken earlier this month in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, has been released.

Artificial intelligence poses a threat of disinformation worldwide, via flooding social media with bots and deepfakes.
For instance, a campaign using AI to impersonate Omar al-Bashir, the former leader of Sudan, received hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok, adding online confusion to a country torn apart by civil war.
While AI is supercharging disinformation's spread and speed, some experts argue that AI can also fight against cybercrime.
Amil Khan, CEO of Valent Projects, which assesses political instability in the information environment, joined AI Decoded on The Context to discuss AI's ability to verify authenticity online.

ODN Video: Haiti Gang Leader Makes Dark Threat Against New Interim Government
This is the new normal in Haiti. As politicians gather at the country’s National Palace for the swearing in of a new transitional council, sporadic gunfire is heard nearby. There are a few nervous faces, but no-one seems especially concerned.
The ceremony was being held to mark a new beginning for the country after the resignation of unpopular Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Thursday, but much of the event had to be held behind closed doors, because the security situation in the capital is so unpredictable.
Gangs still control around 80% of Port-au-prince, and have previously launched attacks on the National Palace, police stations and the country’s main airport.
One of the key aims of the gangs, led by Jimmy "Barbeque" Cherizier, was to topple Ariel Henry’s government. But Henry’s departure seems unlikely to end the violence, with Cherizier warning the new council members to ‘brace’ themselves earlier in the week. They want to be a part of any new government.
Led by Henry’s former finance minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, the new council will seek to bring order back to the embattled Caribbean nation - but it’s a huge task.
Half of the population is struggling to feed itself, according to the world food programme, there is a spiralling economic crisis, and the security services here are desperately short of manpower and equipment. The US has said its helping the Haitian police to regain control.
The council has a mandate until early 2026, by which time a new, democratically elected president will need to be installed.
But it seems certain that the gangs will try to derail that process, and at the moment, no one knows how to stop them.
According to the United Nations, more than 1,500 people were killed and 800 injured in the first three months of 2024.

'Former Post Office Executive Tells Inquiry She’s ‘Truly Sorry’'
Angela van den Bogerd, a former senior director at the Post Office, arrived at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry on Thursday morning.
She began with an apology on the first of her two days of giving evidence, telling the inquiry she was "truly, truly sorry" for the "devastation" caused to wrongly convicted sub-postmasters and their families.
Errors in the Post Office's Horizon IT system meant money appeared to be missing from many branch accounts when, in fact, it was not.
As a result, more than 700 sub-postmasters were handed criminal convictions between 1999 and 2015.
