3 Tips To Help Kids Use Technology Safely

As kids get older, it’s more and more likely that they’ll begin spending time in online spaces, especially in today’s day and age. There’s no way to avoid it—even school projects require internet usage. That’s why it’s so essential to teach them about internet safety. Here are a few tips to help your kids browse safely.

Make Sure They Know They Can Talk to You

As a parent, you are your child’s main source of support. You are there to help them when things go awry. That’s why it is so important to make sure they know they can come to you when they need help.

Your kids must know that you will help them without judgment or punishment. Otherwise, they will likely try to handle the situation on their own, which can get them into worse situations. Prioritizing open, honest, and empathetic discourse with your kid will ensure they come to you first when things go wrong—which they inevitably will.

Teach Them About the Red Flags

It’s one thing to tell your kids to stay away from adult websites and violent videos, and entirely something different to discuss the most terrifying part of being online—other people. This can be a tough subject to handle since you don’t want to give your kids nightmares or tear away their innocence too early. But it is still important to have the conversation.

This is why awareness is the most powerful tool to help kids use technology safely. Kids who don’t know the warning signs are far more likely to be groomed or coerced by predatory adults or teens. And banning them from the internet entirely won’t necessarily solve the issue either, as a lot of grooming can happen in school environments or on messaging apps.

Instead, explain the red flags of people’s behavior to watch out for—older adults or teenagers should not be attempting to “date” or be “friends” with those far younger than them. Explain to them what manipulative and coercive behavior can look like so they know how to steer clear of people who intend to take advantage of them.

Curate Their Access

This isn’t a good solution for older kids, but it can be a great way to begin teaching elementary-aged kids about the internet. Discuss with them what games they are interested in playing and set up the internet on their kid’s profile to only go to those online games. Some kid-friendly games, like Minecraft, don’t need to be played online at all, so those are great options too.

Some great options include Disneynow.com, PBSKids.org, and CartoonNetworkHQ.com, which feature hundreds of games with kids’ favorite cartoon characters.

If you have some time, you can also select appropriate podcasts, cartoons, and music for them to enjoy. You can download these on a tablet or computer for them to watch. That way, you won’t need to be looking over their shoulder—you know everything on there is age appropriate. Just make sure to password protect the internet and the app store.

If your kid has one of those electric cars with built-in tablets, this strategy is a great way to curate what media they can access.

It’s essential to help your kids use technology safely, not ban them from it. With these tips, you’re already well on your way. You’ve got this.

Comments to the media by António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, on Sudan. Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that he “will not relent” in his calls for all parties to “silence the guns, and meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people for a peaceful and secure future.” Guterres spoke to reporters in New York, as today (15 Apr) marks “a heartbreaking milestone” — one year since the start of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The Secretary-General said, “This is more than a conflict between two warring parties. It is a war being waged on the Sudanese people. It is a war on the many thousands of civilians who have been killed, and tens of thousands more maimed for life. It is a war on the 18 million people facing acute hunger, and the communities now staring down the terrifying threat of famine in the months ahead. It is a war on villages, homes, hospitals, schools and vital systems that have been reduced to rubble in conflict hotspots. And it is a war on human rights and international humanitarian law.” Guterres also cautioned that the impact of the conflict is spilling across borders. Over 8 million people have fled their homes in search of safety — 1.8 million to neighbouring countries. One year on – some 25 million people — half of Sudan’s population – need lifesaving assistance. The UN chief noted that the latest reports of escalating hostilities in El Fasher – the capital of North Darfur -- are a fresh cause for deep alarm. Over the weekend, RSF-affiliated militias attacked and burnt villages west of the city – leading to widespread new displacement and fears of a takeover of El Fasher’s only water source nearby. Fighting continued today on the outskirts of El Fasher. Counter attacks have led to more deaths and injuries. The Secretary-General reiterated, “Let me be clear: Any attack on El Fasher would be devastating for civilians and could lead to full-blown intercommunal conflict across Darfur.” He added, “It would also upend aid operations in an area already on the brink of famine, since El Fasher has always been a critical UN humanitarian hub.” “All parties must facilitate the safe, rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian personnel and supplies through all available routes into El Fasher,” Guterres said. He explained, “This includes the timely approval of convoys and avoiding any measures that could delay or otherwise obstruct humanitarian movements. “We must do all we can to ensure maximum humanitarian assistance in Darfur and elsewhere,” the Secretary-General highlighted. Today in Paris, the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and its Neighbors was hosted by the governments of France, Germany and the European Union. The Sudanese people desperately need the support and generosity of the global community to help them through this nightmare, the UN chief said. Guterres told reporters, “The $2.7 billion Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan was only 6 per cent funded. And the $1.4 billion Regional Refugee Response Plan for the Sudan Crisis was only 7 per cent funded. At the same time, he added, “as reflected in their commitments made in Jeddah, all parties must ensure full humanitarian access – across borders and battle lines – so vital aid can get to where it’s needed most.” “They must heed the UN Security Council’s call to ensure rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and to protect civilians,” he continued. The Secretary-General said, “the Sudanese people need more than humanitarian support. They need an end to the bloodshed. They need peace. The only path out of this horror is a political solution.” “At this critical moment, in addition to global support for aid, we need a concerted global push for a ceasefire in Sudan followed by a comprehensive peace process,” he concluded.

Organized by France, Germany, and the European Union, the 'International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Its Neighbours' is scheduled to take place in Paris on 15 April 2024, marking one year since the outbreak of the Sudanese conflict. Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has killed thousands of civilians since it began on 15 April 2023. Over six million people have been displaced internally, while almost two million refugees have fled to neighbouring countries. Nearly 24 million people are in need of aid, with 18 million suffering from crisis levels of food insecurity. Food security analysts have warned of a serious risk of famine, particularly in parts of the Darfur region. Cereal harvests have dropped by almost half compared to last year, and the price of grain has already doubled or tripled in war-affected areas, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Israel’s top general has given the clearest indication that the country will retaliate against Iran, following its mass missile and drone attack. General Herzi Halevi, the IDF chief os staff, said that “the launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response”. It’s not yet clear what form that response will take. The United States has described the Iranian attack as “a spectacular failure”. Around 300 missiles and drones were fired at Israel but almost all were shot down or failed to reach their targets. A handful evaded air defences but caused little damage. President Biden and other national leaders have urged Israel to show restraint and to avoid escalation. They fear the crisis could lead to a wider war in the region. The White House has told Israel that the US will not take part in or assist any counterattack against Iran. Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Williamson and Jeremy Bowen. Mr Trump, 77, has been charged with 34 counts of fraud, related to hush-money that was paid to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty, arguing the allegations he faces are not criminal. In the BBC documentary The Great Liners from 1979, he vividly depicted the harrowing events of that historic night. Footage released by the militant group Hamas suggests they are continuing to fight the IDF in Khan Younis. After months of fierce combat, the IDF has withdrawn its 98th division from the city, saying that its biggest-ever division had “concluded its mission” and needed time to “recuperate”. Israeli defence officials suggest they are merely regrouping for a potential push into Rafah. Some have questioned whether the withdrawal leaves the IDF troops still in Gaza vulnerable to attack. In a video Hamas claimed it was their own successful operations that forced the IDF to pull back. Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, can be seen planning an operation which reportedly killed 14 Israeli soldiers and injured many more. The video shows Hamas fighters planting explosive devices in the ambush area before conducting the attack. Another video appears to show IDF soldiers falling into a home rigged with explosives, which were then detonated on them. They also released a highly-edited compilation clip to mark six months of war against Israel. Hamas fighters claim they are standing firm as IDF ground forces pull out from Khan Younis, but IDF commanders are convinced that “the vast majority of its battalions are dismantled and have lost their capabilities”. The Israelis claim that the remaining IDF troops in the Khan Younis area are there to prevent Palestinians returning to the north. More than 80% of Khan Younis' buildings are estimated to have been destroyed and the rest are mostly uninhabitable. Several ballistic missiles reached Israeli territory, causing minor damage to an air base.
