Different types of chemicals you’ll find in a laboratory

When you step into a laboratory, you enter a world of chemicals. If you’re in pursuit of scientific knowledge and progress, you could learn about the different types of common lab chemicals that form the backbone of lab research. Here is a look at what makes lab experiments tick.

Acids and bases

Acids and bases are elemental combatants in numerous lab reactions. Acids, known for their corrosiveness, alter the pH of a solution and catalyze processes. Bases oppose acids in the chemical realm, which is crucial for balancing formulations.

From the strong and volatile hydrochloric acid to the mild sodium hydroxide, chemicals play a critical role in maintaining the delicate equilibrium of many processes.

Solvent chemicals

Often referred to as universal solvents, these liquid compounds can dissolve other substances, making them great mediums for chemical processes. Water has a polar nature, making it a fundamental solvent for dissolving molecules. Acetone and ethanol are common laboratory staples because they allow researchers to modify their experiments as needed.

Organic compounds

Lab benches and organic compounds go hand in hand. These molecules contain carbon and are essential building blocks in living systems, medicine, food, and everyday materials.

The world of organics is expansive, including the storied beakers of benzene and the barrels of bioactive compounds. Certain laboratory studies, such as pharmaceuticals, rely on organic compounds for experiments and formulations.

Testing and analysis reagents

Chemists rely on reagents in lab experiments. Reagents have a wide range of applications, be it litmus papers signaling a pH change or complex titrations with sophisticated indicators. These chemicals pivot on precision.

They also allow us to view unseen compounds, providing data that underpins scientific theories and technological advances.

Buffer chemicals

Buffer chemicals promote consistent pH levels. In a laboratory, maintaining this stability is as critical as the reactions themselves. Buffers protect samples and maintain accurate conditions, ensuring what you see is what you get in a chemical experiment.

These common types of chemicals in labs are more than just tools of the trade; they drive daily experimentation and results. Understanding these basic chemical distinctions is crucial for pursuing the laboratory sciences.

You’ve got the #GlobalGoals in your hand. Join the global movement towards a more sustainable and equitable future by sharing this video. ------------------------ Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. There has been progress over the last decades, but the world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. But gender inequality persists everywhere and stagnates social progress. On average, women in the labor market still earn 23 percent less than men globally and women spend about three times as many hours in unpaid domestic and care work as men. Sexual violence and exploitation, the unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work, and discrimination in public office, all remain huge barriers. All these areas of inequality have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic: there has been a surge in reports of sexual violence, women have taken on more care work due to school closures, and 70% of health and social workers globally are women. At the current rate, it will take an estimated 300 years to end child marriage, 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power and leadership in the workplace, and 47 years to achieve equal representation in national parliaments. Political leadership, investments and comprehensive policy reforms are needed to dismantle systemic barriers to achieving Goal 5 Gender equality is a cross-cutting objective and must be a key focus of national policies, budgets and institutions.

Highlights: -Secretary-General/Travels -East Africa -CERF/Southern Africa -Madagascar -Sudan -Guest - Tomorrow -Occupied Palestinian Territory -Syria -Ukraine -Cyprus -World Tuna Day -Guest Today SECRETARY-GENERAL/TRAVELS The Secretary-General is in Chile to attend the meeting of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination of the United Nations. This afternoon, he will have a bilateral meeting with the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and that will be followed by a joint press encounter. That will be around 6:45 p.m. here in New York and it will be on our UN Web TV. EAST AFRICA Last night, we issued a statement in which the Secretary-General’s expressed his deep distress at the news of the hundreds of lives lost and many others affected by the heavy flooding in Burundi, in Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania, as well as other parts of East Africa. The United Nations and its partners are working closely with national authorities to address the humanitarian requirements. The Secretary-General stresses that the United Nations stands ready to offer any additional assistance that may be needed during this difficult period. The Secretary-General is extremely concerned about the impacts of El Niño-triggered extreme weather, which risk further devastating communities and undermining livelihoods. CERF/SOUTHERN AFRICA Martin Griffiths, the Emergency Relief Coordinator, has released $13.5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund [CERF] to shore up support to address the El Niño-induced disasters in Southern Africa. The funds will go towards providing food, cash, support for irrigation systems and drought-resistant seed for farmers for planting, among other assistance. This latest allocation brings the total amount earmarked to confront the El Niño crisis globally to more than $60 million. There's a growing consensus that the world must transition away from environmentally harmful fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and gas, which contribute to pollution and exacerbate the climate crisis. While these resources have historically fueled economic growth and generated revenue for nations with abundant reserves, the imperative to reduce emissions requires exploring alternative energy sources. One promising solution emerges from the small island nation of Dominica, where geothermal energy offers a sustainable path forward. Studies indicate that Dominica could meet its entire electricity demand and even export surplus energy by harnessing geothermal power—an abundant, clean, and cost-effective resource lying beneath its surface. Conor Lennon from UN News interviews Vince Henderson, Dominica’s Minister for Economic Development and Sustainable Energy, and Fred John, CEO of the Dominica Geothermal Development Company, to assess the country's progress toward achieving a renewable energy future. Lord Cameron, who has met President Zelensky during a visit to the country’s capital, Kyiv, said the UK would donate military aid worth £3 billion a year "for as long as is necessary". He said British support would include precision-guided bombs and air defence missiles, which Ukraine could use as it saw fit. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously said that Russia is taking advantage of the slow delivery of Western weapons to go on the offensive. Turkey has suspended all trade with Israel over its offensive in Gaza, citing the "worsening humanitarian tragedy" in the strip. The measures would be in place until Israel allowed an "uninterrupted and sufficient flow" of aid into Gaza, the Turkish trade ministry said. A UN-backed assessment said last month that 1.1 million people were facing catastrophic hunger and that famine was imminent in northern Gaza by May. Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to the group's attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage. More than 34,500 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Divisions in the United States over gun control will be amplified in the run up to November's presidential election. That has been particularly stark in the state of Tennessee. A year ago a shooting at a school in the state capital Nashville that left three nine-year-olds dead sparked protests in the legislative building. Democrat representative Justin Jones, megaphone in hand, backed the protestors' calls for tighter controls and was then expelled.
