Europe has done remarkably well against a turbulent backdrop. After years of crises and their fallouts, a soft landing for the continent’s economies is within reach. Securing it will require careful calibration of macroeconomic policies. As the cyclical recovery runs its course, growth will increasingly depend on structural factors. Yet there are several formidable headwinds to growth, including weakening productivity, an aging population, and underinvestment. Navigating these headwinds to higher medium-term growth will require structural reform efforts that should begin now. For the EU, this means urgently tapping the significant potential from further European integration. Combined with complementary measures at the domestic level, these reforms would go to show once again how Europe can overcome even the most severe obstacles when acting decisively and together.
The just released IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Europe discusses the economic reform agenda needed to cope with these multiple challenges. The discussion will focus on what policymakers in Brussels and at the national level can and should do to return Europe to greater competitiveness and faster growth.
The Regional Economic Outlook will be presented by Mr. Alfred Kammer, Director of the European Department at the IMF. He will then be joined by Ms. Maria Demertzis, Senior Fellow at Bruegel, and Ms. Christiane Nickel, Deputy Director General of DG Economics at the European Central Bank, for a panel discussion moderated by Ms. Maria Tadeo, Europe Correspondent.

World Economic Forum Video: VR Can Boost Empathy & Bus Powered by Dates | WEF | Top Stories of the Week
This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 VR can boost empathy – Virtual reality (VR) shows promise in increasing empathy and encouraging donations towards refugee crises. The study's authors suggest VR's immersive nature bridges ideological divides, influencing attitudes in a way traditional media might not. This has significant practical implications for NGOs and aid agencies seeking to raise awareness and secure donations for humanitarian crises.
1:53 This bus in Oman is powered by dates – It’s the first of its kind in the Middle East. The bus runs on biodiesel made from waste date kernels produced by scientists at Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University. The date kernels are washed, dried and crushed and the oil is extracted using alcohol before a chemical catalyst converts it into biodiesel. The bus made its inaugural journey in December 2022.
4:46 Building ships with the metaverse – The metaverse offers a groundbreaking solution: digital twins. Using AI, designers can create a photorealistic, virtual replica of the entire ship. This allows them to identify and fix any issues during the design phase, well before construction begins.
6:16 3 leading insights on AI – Experts predict 69 million jobs will be created over the next 5 years while 83 million jobs will be lost, a 2% net decrease in employment. Despite this, Freakley says AI will help boost economies facing labour shortages.

World Economic Forum Video: Tinder Swindler: how 'romance fraud' became a multi-billion dollar cybercrime
The Netflix documentary 'The Tinder Swindler' is a mind-boggling case of so-called 'romance fraud' in which a charming, handsome - and apparently very rich - man meets women on a dating app - gets them to fall in love with him - and then cons them out of lots of money.
Cecilie Fjellhøy is the Norwegian woman at the centre of the documentary whose life was torn apart by the actions of a conman. A survivor of romance fraud on a grand scale, she now advocates for the rights of, and support for, others who find themselves in similar grim circumstances.
We also hear from Sean Doyle, who works at the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity, on just how widespread romance fraud really is, why it’s a multinational, multi-billion form of cyber crime, and what is being done to combat it.

Now a new kind of digital banking service is helping to close this gap.
2:23 World's busiest airports revealed – The world's busiest airports in 2023 were dominated by the United States, with five airports cracking the top 10. Overall, global airports saw a significant rebound in 2023, handling a total of 8.5 billion trips.
4:39 WMO: Asia hardest hit by climate – In 2023, Asia saw a wave of extreme weather events from floods to cyclones. World Economic Forum Head of Climate Adaptation Eric White explains why climate change is making extreme weather more likely.
7:07 Saving Earth with space science – Simonetta Di Pippo says that space is already helping tackle the greatest challenges on Earth. Satellite connectivity is improving our management of disasters and powering digital transformation. Which is revolutionizing sectors from healthcare to education, retail and communication.

'Spatial computing', 'blended reality', 'the metaverse'. For those of us who still use screens and keyboards to access the digital world, those phrases might not mean very much. But many experts believe the '2D' internet will soon be a thing of the past, and we will all be, one way or another, in a 3D metaverse.
With Apple's Vision Pro headset renewing interest in virtual reality, we speak to two proponents of the metaverse who see both huge opportunities and significant risks.

Economic Video: Boeing shareholders approve CEO's compensation as company faces investigations, possible prosecution
Boeing shareholders on Friday approved CEO David Calhoun's $32.8 million compensation and heard leaders explain what the troubled aircraft maker is doing to improve the quality and safety of its planes after a door plug blew off a Boeing 737 Max jetliner in January.
Calhoun said the company is finishing a 90-day plan for fixing its manufacturing problems — a report the Federal Aviation Administration demanded after the door-plug blowout.
The CEO added that the company is still working to complete an acquisition of key supplier Spirit AeroSystems, but he gave no deadline for completion. Spirit makes fuselages for Max jets and has been a source of manufacturing flaws.

Economic Video: Tesla is rehiring some of the Supercharging team that it laid-off
Tesla (TSLA) is rehiring back some of its Supercharger team which were laid off last month, according to Bloomberg. This comes after CEO Elon Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the EV maker was all in on expanding its Supercharger network with an investment of over $500 million in spite of headcount reductions and recent executive departures.
ROTH Capital Senior Research Analyst Craig Irwin sits down with Catalysts to talk about Tesla's Supercharger road map and which areas the auto company should be prioritizing.
They got to show they can they can get growth going again right? When you decline 7 or 8% you've got to actually show that you can get to positive growth again. That's not particularly easy. They're going to have to cut price, they're going to have to be aggressive," Irwin states. "And they're going to have to lay out a path to the mini car, the cyber taxi, robotaxi, whatever it's going to be. Where's the growth going to come from? they've got a lot of work to do with investors."

A Houston-bound Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Southwest Airlines returned safely to Denver International Airport on Sunday after an engine cover fell off and struck the wing flap, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The agency said it will investigate.
In recorded air traffic control audio, one of the pilots said that “several passengers and flight attendants heard something loud hit the wing.”
In a statement to CNN, Southwest said passengers would take another plane to Houston and would be approximately three hours behind schedule.
“We apologize for the inconvenience of their delay but place our highest priority on ultimate Safety for our Customers and Employees,” the statement said. Southwest said no injuries were reported.
Boeing declined to comment and referred CNN to Southwest for information about plane and fleet operations.
